Tiaki Early Learning Centre Celebrates a Week-long Matariki with Whānau and Community

Tiaki Early Learning Centre celebrated Matariki, the Māori New Year, with a week of meaningful and engaging experiences that brought together tamariki, whānau, and the wider community in a spirit of reflection, renewal, and connection.

Matariki marks a special time on the Māori calendar — a time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present, and look to the future with hope and aspiration. At Tiaki ELC, the week was filled with rich cultural experiences designed to deepen children’s understanding of Māori traditions and foster a sense of belonging.

“Our celebration of Matariki is more than just a festive event,” says Centre Director Dr Guna Magesan. “It’s an opportunity to honour Māori culture and values, connect with the natural world, and bring our community closer together. A big thank you to all teachers and whanau.”

Throughout the week, tamariki participated in a range of experiential learning activities:

  • Art projects inspired by Matariki stars and Māori motifs
  • Cooking lessons involving traditional recipes and shared kai
  • Storytelling sessions with a guest speaker from the local library
  • Waiata and traditional games
  • Hāngī prepared with support from whānau
  • Donations of kai shared among families to reflect the spirit of generosity and care

Each day began with mat time where stories and legends of Matariki were shared, connecting children to Māori history and cosmology. These moments allowed tamariki to explore the stars, seasons, and natural cycles that shape our lives.

The celebration also provided a platform for whānau to express their aspirations, share their knowledge, and contribute to the children’s learning journey. “We were humbled by the support and aroha from our families,” says Catherine Maraldi, Senior Teacher at Tiaki ELC. “This event truly embodied the spirit of kotahitanga – unity.”

By weaving Matariki into the curriculum, Tiaki ELC continues to foster cultural awareness, respect, and a sense of identity among its young learners. It’s part of the centre’s commitment to nurturing not only confident and competent children but also compassionate and connected global citizens.
