“The brutal assault on a migrant worker in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district has once again highlighted the ground-level fallout of sustained hostility toward north Indian migrants. In a viral video, four minors are seen attacking the victim with sickles near a railway station, filming the violence and celebrating it. Police say the assault followed threats made on a moving train. The victim remains in critical condition.

BJP leader Annamalai alleged the attackers were ganja addicts. Beyond the crime itself, the incident has revived concerns that decades of political rhetoric portraying Hindi speakers as outsiders have normalised abuse, exclusion, and violence against migrant workers in the state.
