CM Siddaramaiah’s rule marked by halted projects, yet appeasement politics continues: GBA renames Kumaraswamy layout to Yarab Nagar: Bengaluru, KA

The Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has once again found itself at the center of a heated controversy after the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) issued a notification renaming multiple BBMP wards, with the most contentious change being the renaming of Kumaraswamy Layout Ward to Yarab Nagar Ward. What was expected to be a technical reshuffling under the new GBA structure has instead ignited a fierce political confrontation, with opposition parties and Hindu organizations criticizing the Congress government for pushing cheap vote-bank–driven appeasement at the cost of Bengaluru’s cultural identity.

Unilateral decision without public consultation

According to the Organiser reports, the GBA, which came into force to replace the dissolved BBMP Council, has been rolling out large-scale administrative revisions over the past six months, including ward delimitation and jurisdictional restructuring. However, the December 1 notification blindsided residents, as several well-established wards saw name changes without any public hearings, justification, or community participation. Among these, the renaming of Kumaraswamy Layout, a locality named after the historic Kumaraswamy Temple, has caused the sharpest backlash.

BJP and JDS slam Congress for ‘Erasing Bengaluru’s Heritage.’

The BJP and JDS have launched a scathing attack on the government, alleging that the renaming exercise is an attempt to alter Bengaluru’s cultural landscape for electoral gains. The BJP questioned whether even a single resident had requested the change, calling the move political engineering masquerading as administration. Party leaders said that if Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar were so eager to promote new names, they should “rename their own homes as Yarab Niwas instead of tampering with public wards.” According to the opposition, the abrupt shift from a temple-linked name to Yarab Nagar is evidence of a clear anti-Hindu bias and a continuing pattern of Islamic appeasement.

Hindu groups have also joined the protest, asserting that the government is deliberately undermining Bengaluru’s traditional and religious landmarks. Several leaders pointed out that the ward’s original name commemorated a centuries-old temple, and changing it without consultation disrespects the sentiments of the local Hindu community.

Not an isolated incident

This uproar follows another recent controversy in which the government reversed the name ‘Akash Nagar’ after public opposition, only to rename it ‘Aero City,’ leading to fresh allegations of inconsistency and non-transparency. Similarly, wards such as Indiranagar, New Thippasandra, Kalyana Nagar, T.C. Palya (now Anandpur), Medahalli, and others have undergone boundary or name revisions, leaving residents uncertain and frustrated. Civic activists argue that a metropolis of 1.4 crore people cannot be governed through sudden diktats issued without discussion or public communication.

As criticism mounts, opposition parties and citizen groups are calling for all renaming decisions to be halted until the government publishes clear criteria, conducts public consultations, and respects Bengaluru’s historical identity. The ongoing dispute highlights the widening mistrust surrounding the GBA’s functioning, which many now fear is operating in opacity rather than improving urban governance, as originally envisioned.

The Congress government’s obsession with announcing unsustainable freebies has depleted Karnataka’s treasury to the point where no meaningful development has occurred in the last two years. Except for projects funded by the central government, virtually every major state-led initiative has stalled due to acute financial constraints. Instead of addressing this crisis, the government is accused of resorting to Islamic appeasement politics, withdrawing cases against Islamist goons involved in violence, and using tactics that allegedly provoke Hindu–Muslim tensions to divert public attention. By consistently undermining Hindu sentiments, restricting traditional Hindu celebrations, and turning a blind eye to or even enabling Islamist-backed attacks on Hindu festivals, the administration is seen as pushing the majority community to the margins. Opponents argue that this pattern reflects a government more invested in fostering communal divides than in ensuring progress, governance, or stability in Karnataka.
