“The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is set to introduce a series of bills in the upcoming Assembly session aimed at addressing “love jihad,” polygamy, and preserving the state’s cultural heritage. The proposed legislation also seeks to grant land rights to the tea tribes community and protect Satras Vaishnavite monasteries, allegedly to counter Islamic aggression in Assam through “land jihad.”

Addressing the media, Sarma stated that the new bills would be “historic” and “transformative,” but withheld detailed information, saying specifics would be revealed after the state cabinet’s formal approval. The proposed laws are expected to include measures to preserve Satras Vaishnavite monasteries, regulate land sales, grant land rights to tea tribes, ban polygamy, and target “love jihad” with proposed life imprisonment sentences.

The bills have drawn criticism from opposition parties and civil rights groups, who accuse the government of exploiting communal rhetoric for political gain. Critics argue that the proposed laws, particularly those targeting “love jihad,” are based on a so-called ‘conspiracy theory’ with no basis in Indian law and are designed to fuel communal polarization. But, the magnitude of ‘love jihad’, ‘land jihad’, and ‘Islamic polygamy’ has reached a peak in India across all its provinces, which should be stopped at any cost to protect Indian democracy and ensure the security of the majority Hindu population, thereby preventing any potential Islamic separation of the country…..”
