The persecution of marginalised Hindu minorities is continuing in Bangladesh. A fresh case has been reported from Dhaka.
On the morning of Sunday, 9th June, authorities from the Dhaka South City Corporation(DSC) issued an order to clear the Miranjilla area. The area comes under the Banshal area.
Hearing about the order, the members of the Hindu minority community started protesting and met the Mayor of the DSC, Fazle Nur Tapas. Fazle Nur Tapas assured that only a part of the area will be cleared.
But, the next day, the authorities of the DSC reached the Miranjilla area with bulldozers. Heavy police force was also deployed. Without any warning, the authorities started to bulldoze the homes of the Hindu minorities. More than a hundred Hindu homes were demolished. Hindus couldn’t remove their essential things from their homes. Many women cried in front of the authorities but in vain.
Later, Hindus unitedly started a protest to stop the demolition drive. Hindus lay on the road before the bulldozer to stop the demolition.
Members of the Hindu organisation ‘Jatiyo Hindu Mahajote’ reached the protest site. Secretary of the organisation, Sri Govinda Chandra Pramanik, talked to the evicted Hindu families, and he promised to provide all possible help to them.
Notably, these Hindu families have been living there for generations. Some local Hindus said their families have lived in the area for over 400 years. These Hindus speak Telegu and belong to the Harijan Community. British brought them to Dhaka from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh region for cleaning works. Since then, these families have been living in the area.
