How Ayurveda is repackaged by West in the name of ‘new research’

How Ayurveda is repackaged by West in the name of new research.

National Institute of Health publishes a research report that chewing wood is good for brain and cardiovascular health.

In the seminal book Ashtang Hriday of Ayurveda there is a concept of Dincharya where concept of Daatun (chewing wood stick of special plants to cleanse rhe teeth) has been mentioned. That predates chewing wood for good health to some 2000 years ago.

1. In Dincharya Adhyay of Ashtang Hriday start of rhe day is Prataruthana. Perfect time to wake up is Brahma Mahurta.

2. Second part of Dincharya is Dantadhavana.

Ashtang hriday mentioned the name of suitable plants whose sticks could be chewed to maintain dental/ oral hygiene.

3. This is how our Vedic knowledge is repackage and sold as a science by westerners.

Right from Turmeric to Daarun they have plagiarized everything.

4. Ashtang hriday further elaborates that for an ideal Daatun

The thickness of the twig should be approximately equal to the tip of one’s little finger. it should be 12 angula length. straight the tip of the twig should be chewed a little to make it as brush.

The teeth should be cleaned without hurting the gums.

  1. Ashtang Hriday also mentions rules for “Who should not use Datun”.

नाध्यादजीर्णवमथुश्वासकासज्वरार्दिती
तृष्णास्यपाकहृन्नेत्रशिरः कर्णमयी च तत्

People suffering from

· अजीर्ण / indigestion,
· वमथु / vomiting,
· श्वास / dyspnoea,
· कास / cough,
· ज्वर / fever,
· अर्दित / facial paralysis,
· तृष्णा / excessive thirst
· आस्यपाक / ulceration of mouth,
· हृ / heart disease,
· नेत्रशिरः कर्णमयी / diseases of eyes, head and ears.

6. What Vagbhata taught us in Ashtang Hriday in the 6th century CE is now repackaged by the West as new research!!

8. Through patenting without consent, foreign companies have collared at least 22 plants for their beneficial derivatives. Patents have been taken out on plants such as black pepper (Piper nigrum), basmati rice (Oryza sativa), Indian mustard (Brassica campestris), pomegranate (Punica granatum), turmeric (Curcuma domestica) and neem (Azadirachta indica) the US, Japanese and German companies are the principal patenting pirates.

9. in 1997, an American company, RiceTec Inc., was granted a patent on “basmati rice lines and grains” by the US Patent and Trademark Office, which sparked controversy as Basmati is an indigenous crop of Indian subcontinent.

10. India protested, arguing that Basmati is a traditional crop from their regions and the patent was a form of “biopiracy”.

11. RiceTec claimed to have developed new varieties of Basmati rice with improved qualities through cross-breeding with an American long-grain rice variety, which they marketed as “Jasmati” or “Kasmati”.

12.The patent for Neem was first filed by W.R. Grace and the Department of Agriculture, USA in European Patent Office. The said patent was deemed to be a method of controlling fungi on plants comprising of contacting the fungi with a Neem oil formulation. A legal opposition was filed by India against the grant of the patent. The legal opposition to this patent was lodged by the New Delhi-based Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology (RFSTE), in cooperation with the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and Magda Aelvoet, former green Member of the European Parliament (MEP).

Largest number of patents is in USA (54) followed by Japan (35), Australia (23), India (14). In India additionally more than 53 patent applications are pending for either gazette notification or opposition since 1995. If granted India will have the largest number of patents in neem.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) revoked a patent on turmeric in 1997 after India challenged it. The patent was granted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1995.

14. We all need to raise our voice to preserve our Vedic heritage. Leaving everything to the govt. will serve no purpose.
