In a tragic incident near the Indo-Bangladesh border, three Bangladeshi nationals suspected of cattle smuggling were beaten to death by villagers in Tripura’s Khowai district on Wednesday evening.
According to local sources, the incident took place in the Vidyabil area, under the jurisdiction of Khowai police station, when a group of suspected cattle smugglers reportedly crossed the border from Bangladesh and attempted to smuggle cattle into their territory. Villagers, upon spotting the intruders, raised an alarm and chased them down. In the ensuing chaos, three smugglers were severely beaten, leading to their deaths on the spot.
Police later reached the scene and recovered the bodies. A senior police official confirmed that the deceased are believed to be Bangladeshi nationals engaged in cross-border cattle smuggling. Their identities are yet to be officially verified, and the bodies have been sent for autopsy.
The Tripura Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working in coordination with Border Security Force (BSF) officials to determine how the group managed to cross the international boundary.
Cattle smuggling across the Tripura-Bangladesh border remains a persistent issue despite heightened border vigilance. Frequent clashes between villagers, smugglers, and security personnel have been reported in recent years, often resulting in casualties on both sides.
Local authorities have appealed to residents not to take the law into their own hands and to immediately inform law enforcement if suspicious cross-border activity is noticed.
