Today marks the birthday of Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, one of Bharat’s three living recipients of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC)—the nation’s highest military honor. His extraordinary courage during the Kargil War in 1999 remains an enduring symbol of valor and sacrifice.
From humble beginnings to the battlefield
Born on March 3, 1976, in Kalol Bakain village, Bilaspur District, Himachal Pradesh, Sanjay Kumar came from a Dogra Rajput family. Before joining the army, he worked as a taxi driver in New Delhi, determined to serve his family and the nation. Though his application was rejected three times, his persistence led to his eventual enlistment in the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on June 26, 1996.
The Kargil War: Defining bravery at flat top
During the Kargil War, on July 4, 1999, Sanjay Kumar led an assault to recapture Area Flat Top in the Mushkoh Valley, a strategic position held by Pakistani troops. Under relentless machine-gun fire, he charged directly at enemy bunkers, neutralizing three enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. Despite sustaining multiple bullet wounds, he seized an enemy machine gun, advanced further, and killed the remaining soldiers, paving the way for his battalion to successfully capture the post.
His unparalleled courage turned the tide of battle, securing a critical victory for Bharat.
Bharat’s highest honor: the Param Vir Chakra
For his unmatched bravery and sacrifice, Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry award. His actions were recognized as a testament to the unwavering spirit of a Bharatiya soldier. Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar is one of only three living Param Vir Chakra awardees, alongside Subedar Major Bana Singh and Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav. Their heroism represents the highest ideals of the Bharatiya Armed Forces, inspiring future generations.
On his birthday, Bharatiyas across the country salute Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar for his selfless service and unparalleled bravery. His journey—from a determined youth to a national hero—embodies the spirit of the Bharatiya Army and serves as an everlasting reminder of true courage and devotion to the nation.
