Kerala Protest Sparks Outrage Over Mishandling of Om

Visuals from a recent protest march in Palakkad have sparked debate over protest conduct and cultural sensitivity, particularly as the demonstration followed the death of a student at a school hostel. The protest was organised by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and was directed at a well-known school in Palakkad run by an organisation affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The protest followed the tragic death of a student residing in the school hostel. According to media reports, the police have initiated an investigation into the incident, and based on preliminary information, the death is being treated as a suspected case of suicide. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that conclusions will be drawn only after all aspects are examined.

During the protest, certain visuals drew public attention and were widely circulated on social media and television channels.

In particular, footage showing the sacred Omkara symbol at the school’s entrance being removed and handled during the protest triggered strong reactions online. The visuals were later shared prominently on social media platforms associated with the SFI

The circulation of these images has raised questions about sensitivity and responsibility during protests, especially at a time when the deceased student’s family is grieving and an official investigation is still underway.

Critics have questioned whether such actions were avoidable and whether protest conduct should adhere to consistent standards when cultural or religious symbols are involved. No official response has yet been issued by the state government regarding the visuals. Meanwhile, the incident has added to a broader public discussion on protest ethics, cultural respect, and accountability in politically charged demonstrations.

The visuals have prompted broader questions about protest conduct and cultural sensitivity. Was the circulation of these images an inadvertent act, or a deliberate choice? Were sufficient sensitivity and restraint exercised during the protest, given that the investigation into the student’s death is still ongoing? And finally, will protests involving cultural or religious symbols be held to the same standards across different communities?

This video looks at the Palakkad protest, the widely circulated visuals, and the broader discussion on responsibility and respect for cultural symbols.
