Several local Hindu cultural organisations are expressing disappointment with recent Diwali/Deepavali celebrations where non-vegetarian food was served. Diwali/Deepavali, a sacred festival with deep cultural significance, is traditionally observed with vegetarian meals as an act of reverence, and these groups are urging that future events respect these customs.
Emphasizing Cultural Sensitivity and Respect for Tradition
In a joint statement, the Hindu cultural groups acknowledged the dedication involved in organising the events and commended the effort to unite the community. However, they stressed the need to honour the festival’s traditions. “We truly value the work put into bringing the community together for Diwali/Deepavali. Unfortunately, seeing meat being served at these events was disheartening. Diwali/Deepavali is a time for religious reflection, and traditionally, vegetarian meals are served to honour these values,” the groups stated.
Concerns Over Commercialisation of Cultural Celebrations
The groups also expressed concerns about the growing commercialisation of Diwali/Deepavali celebrations, emphasizing that business interests should not detract from the spiritual and cultural essence of the festival. “Cultural celebrations lose their significance when they become commercial ventures. While we understand that diverse food offerings appeal to broad audiences, serving meat during Diwali/Deepavali goes against the cultural values of this sacred occasion,” they added.
Recommendations for Future Celebrations
To balance cultural integrity with inclusivity, the groups suggested that future events featuring various food options be organised under separate themes, not directly associated with Diwali/Deepavali. “Holding events under a different theme allows for diverse food offerings while preserving the sanctity of Diwali/Deepavali celebrations,” the groups recommended.
A Call for Thoughtful Consideration
The Hindu cultural groups are encouraging event organisers to view their feedback constructively and to help foster a greater understanding of cultural practices in the community. “We hope that our feedback will be taken in the spirit of preserving Diwali’s authenticity. We look forward to supporting and collaborating with organisers in future celebrations that honour our shared cultural heritage,” the groups concluded.
