Tension gripped the Ramkrishnapur area of Kulpi Assembly constituency after miscreants allegedly beheaded the Murti of Sri Bajrangbali at the Bajrangbali Temple near Singir Hat More late on Monday night. The temple’s aarti sound system was also vandalised during the attack.
Local residents and worshippers expressed outrage and demanded that the administration immediately arrest the perpetrators and take strict legal action. The incident has sparked fresh debate over the state’s law and order situation, particularly concerning attacks on Hindu religious sites.
Community members and political observers alleged that under West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rule, attacks on Hindu faith, temples, and deities have become increasingly frequent. Similar incidents have reportedly been witnessed across regions including Kakdwip and Mandir Bazar.
Critics also pointed to recent controversial actions involving the police—such as the incident where a Murti of Goddess Kali was seen being carried on a prison van—claiming that authorities have failed to act against offenders while instead cracking down on protesters defending their religious sentiments.
Local leaders argued that the growing pattern of temple vandalism reflects a breakdown of law and order, accusing the government of “appeasement politics” and alleging that failure to punish offenders has emboldened miscreants.
The December 9 incident has heightened local anger, with residents stating that such repeated attacks are becoming “unbearable” and calling for exemplary punishment to deter future occurrences.
Police investigation is reportedly underway.
