Muslim Man Arrested for Alleged Blackmail and Forced Marriage of Hindu Policewoman in UP

A married woman police constable posted in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district has accused a Muslim man of trapping her in a relationship, blackmailing her with threats to complain to her husband, extorting money and then allegedly confining her in Pune and pressuring her for marriage. Police have rescued the constable from Maharashtra and arrested the accused, initiating legal action under relevant criminal sections.

Background of the parties

The complainant is originally from Rae Bareli district and is currently serving as a police constable in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. The accused has been identified as Gulfaam alias Arkan Ahmad, a resident of Purwa village in Kunda police station area of Pratapgarh district. According to the complaint, their first meeting took place about seven months ago, after which they remained in regular contact over phone.

Alleged entrapment and blackmail

As per the FIR narrative, the accused allegedly continued the relationship even after learning that the woman was married and working in the police department. When she refused to meet him, he allegedly threatened to complain to her husband and used this pressure to coerce her into following his demands. Under this duress, he allegedly got 20,000 rupees transferred into his bank account on 1 December, exploiting her fear that her marital relationship could be destroyed if he contacted her husband.

Journey to Pune and alleged confinement

The constable has stated that the accused then called her to Pune in Maharashtra and insisted that she travel there to meet him. On 3 December, she reportedly left for Pune without informing anyone in her family or department and reached the Pune bus stand, where the accused picked her up and took her to a rented room. At this location, he allegedly locked the room and repeatedly pressured her to marry him, claiming that if she refused, he would kill her, thereby combining alleged criminal intimidation with unlawful confinement.

Threats, rescue operation and arrest

According to the complaint, the woman constable managed to get an opportunity to inform her brother about her situation despite being confined. Her family then contacted the police, following which her brother, accompanied by police personnel, reached Pune and located the premises where she was being held. The police team succeeded in rescuing the constable and took the accused into custody on the spot, after which he was brought under transit procedures and handed over to Mainpuri police.

Mainpuri district police have registered a case on the basis of the woman constable’s written complaint, invoking sections related to cheating, criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement and coercion, as applicable under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials have stated that interrogation of the accused is under way and further sections may be added once technical evidence, call records and financial transaction details are fully analyzed. The case is another example of love jihad, but formal charges are yet be lodged in this regard.
