Kerala police arrest Thampil Mohammed Ajmal for Instagram jewellery scam targeting teenage girls

The Kerala Police have arrested a fraudster named Thampil Mohammed Ajmal. This 20-year-old from Chamaravattam used Instagram to trick girls and steal their gold jewellery. He was arrested in Valancherry after a relative of one of his victims filed a complaint.

Ajmal targeted girls on Instagram, primarily those studying in class 10. He would chat with them, gain their trust, and then ask to meet them. During these meetings, he would convince the girls to give him their jewellery, promising to make new pieces for them. After taking the jewellery, he would cut off contact and disappear. Many girls fell victim to his scheme.

One of the girls told her parents about the fraud, leading to a complaint being filed with the Kalpakancheri police. The investigation revealed that the accused never gave his phone number to his victims, making it hard for the police to track him down. He was also very careful about his social media use.

To catch Ajmal, the police created a fake Instagram profile pretending to be a girl. He began chatting with this profile, and eventually, they arranged to meet. When Ajmal showed up, the police arrested him.

Ajmal confessed that he had given the stolen gold to his friend Niffik, whom he befriended on Instagram. Niffik, a resident of Naripparambil in Chamaravattam, is now on the run. The police are actively searching for him.
