In Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Kanpur, Rahat Jahan and her mother stole a child because Jahan desperately wanted a son. The police recovered the child safely and returned him to his real parents. According to reports, Rahat Jahan, who has three daughters, wanted a son. She tried to adopt a boy but was unsuccessful. She then shared her desire with her mother, Roshan Jahan, and they both planned to steal a child.
Their target was a 9-month-old boy who was with two young girls in the Bekanganj market of Kanpur. The women tricked the girls by offering them golgappas. When the golgappas were too spicy, the women paid for the girls to drink lassi. While the girls were distracted, the women took the baby and left the market.
When the girls returned home, they told their parents about the incident. The parents immediately reported the theft to the police. The police formed eight teams to search for the child and reviewed around 600 CCTV footage. Using the CCTV evidence, they identified and located the women.
Rahat Jahan took the child home and told her husband she had bought him. The husband did not question this claim. When the police confronted the women, they initially claimed they found the child on the road. However, fearing legal action, they admitted to stealing the baby. The police arrested both women, ensuring the child was returned safely to his parents.
