Tension gripped the Bot Tala area of Mallikpur village in South 24 Parganas after several Jagaddhatri Murtis were vandalized late on the night of 28th October, Tuesday. The incident occurred at a local artisan’s workshop where multiple Murtis were being prepared ahead of the Jagaddhatri Puja. According to locals, the miscreants decapitated the Murtis and took away the heads under the cover of darkness.
The incident has sparked widespread anger among residents and devotees, who allege a growing trend of attacks on Hindu religious practices across the state.
Reacting strongly, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari condemned the incident and blamed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government for fostering what he termed “appeasement politics.”
In a statement on social media, Suvendu Adhikari said:
“Hindus are being obstructed from practicing their faith freely. This is the direct result of Mamata Banerjee’s limitless appeasement and the patronage extended by her police. Hindus in Bengal are suffering because of her policies. Unless this appeasement-driven government is voted out, such incidents will continue.”
Adhikari further alleged that West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee’s rule is increasingly resembling Bangladesh in terms of communal tensions and religious intolerance — a remark that has sparked intense political debate.
The police have launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify those involved. As of now, no arrests have been reported.
Opposition parties have demanded immediate action and stronger protection for Hindu religious sites, while the state government has not yet issued an official response.
