Tensions flared in Madanapalle, located in the Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh, following an assault on an Ayyappa devotee by an Islamist youth. Based on the reports from OpIndia, the incident occurred on the evening of December 25 near the RTC bus stand, where Venkatesh, the devotee, was allegedly attacked by Islamist Ziaul Huq for wearing an Ayyappa mala.
The altercation reportedly began when Venkatesh requested Islamist Ziaul Huq to move his two-wheeler, which was obstructing the road. Enraged, Islamist Ziaul Huq attacked Venkatesh, tearing his Ayyappa mala and shirt during the scuffle. The situation escalated until bystanders intervened to stop the assault.
News of the incident spread quickly, prompting members of Hindu groups to gather at the scene. Chanting slogans condemning the attack, they expressed outrage over the disrespect shown towards the symbol of Bhagwan Ayyappa. The groups are now demanding stringent action against Islamist Ziaul Huq, who is said to hail from Bidar.
Police later arrived at the scene to defuse the tension and took Islamist Ziaul Huq into custody. In an effort to pacify the anger among Ayyappa devotees, the police made Ziaul apologize by touching Venkatesh’s feet. This act helped ease the situation, with several Ayyappa devotees present alongside Venkatesh when the apology was made.
This incident follows another troubling episode on December 7 in Rayachoti town, Andhra Pradesh, where a bus carrying Ayyappa devotees was attacked. An Islamist mob reportedly targeted the vehicle because it was playing Hindu devotional songs at a volume they claimed was too loud and audible outside the bus.
Devotees who revere Ayyappa Bhagwan and undertake pilgrimages to Sabarimala, especially during the peak season from November to January, are facing rising hostility. This incident in Madanapalle is a stark reminder of how certain Islamic elements are seeking to undermine the religious practices of Hindus, particularly those who follow traditions like the Ayyappa pilgrimage. The lack of swift and decisive action from law enforcement only emboldens these radical forces, further escalating tensions and fueling communal discord.
