Instagram ‘Hindu’ Turns Out to Be Married Muslim: Amroha Case Sparks Fresh Concerns on Online Fraud

A youth from Amroha’s Gajraula area is under investigation after allegedly hiding his Muslim identity, posing as a Hindu on Instagram, and sexually exploiting a young Hindu woman under the false promise of marriage, leading to pregnancy and abortion, according to reports dated 4 February 2026.

Alleged deception via Instagram

According to reports, the accused has been identified as Sahil, a resident of Gajraula in Amroha district, Uttar Pradesh. He allegedly created an Instagram profile in which he projected himself as a Hindu and initiated contact with a young woman, whose identity has been kept confidential. The online friendship reportedly developed over time into a romantic relationship, during which the youth is said to have repeatedly assured the woman that he intended to marry her.

Reportedly, the woman believed him to be a Hindu man, as indicated by his social media profile and the way he introduced himself, and therefore continued the relationship on that basis. Police sources quoted in the coverage said the man’s religious identity and marital status were concealed at the initial stages of the relationship.

Promise of marriage, sexual exploitation and pregnancy

As per the complaint, Sahil is alleged to have established physical relations with the woman on multiple occasions, all under the explicit promise that he would soon marry her. The woman later told the police that she trusted these assurances and did not initially suspect any fraud or misrepresentation. Over time, she reportedly became pregnant as a result of the relationship.

The report states that once her pregnancy came to light, the accused allegedly pressured her to undergo an abortion instead of moving forward with marriage. The woman has claimed that she was emotionally coerced into ending the pregnancy, believing that this would help “save” the relationship and pave the way for a later marriage. After the abortion, however, the man is said to have started distancing himself and avoided any concrete step towards marriage.

Wife’s disclosure of accused’s identity

The turning point in the case reportedly came when the accused’s wife approached the woman and revealed that Sahil was already married and a Muslim, and that he had been concealing both his religion and his marital status while presenting himself as a Hindu bachelor. The wife allegedly confronted the victim and informed her that she too had faced problems because of his conduct.

According to the report, this revelation shocked the young woman, who then realised that she had been in a relationship with a married man from a different religion who had used a false Hindu identity on social media. The wife’s disclosure is reported to have prompted the victim to collect evidence and approach the police.

Following the disclosure, the woman lodged a formal complaint at the local police station in Gajraula, accusing Sahil of cheating, rape under the pretext of marriage, causing forced abortion, and hiding his true identity. The news report states that the police registered a case on the basis of her statement, invoking serious sections of the Indian Penal Code related to sexual assault and fraud, as well as provisions connected with causing miscarriage without consent if applicable, though exact sections were not detailed in the article.

Officials quoted in the report said that an investigation has been initiated, statements are being recorded, and medical and documentary evidence regarding the pregnancy and abortion are being examined. Police are also verifying the accused’s marital status and religious identity as part of the investigation, and the role of any other persons, including family members or clinic staff, in facilitating the abortion is also under scrutiny.

Local context and rising concerns

The incident from Amroha adds to a series of recent cases reported from Uttar Pradesh and other states in which young Hindu women have accused Muslim men of hiding their religious identity, promising marriage, and then subjecting them to sexual exploitation or coercion. In several such cases documented in the media and civil society trackers, the pattern involves prolonged online or phone-based contact, use of fake Hindu names by Muslim men, and subsequent pressure for abortion or conversion when the relationship leads to pregnancy or marriage demands.

In the Amroha case, the complainant has specifically linked her decision to enter into a relationship to the belief that the man was Hindu and unmarried, a belief she says was shattered when his wife exposed the truth. Police officials have stated that further action will be taken once the investigation is completed and all forensic and documentary evidence is assessed.
