Yet, amid celebrations, voices criticise the focus on temple construction, questioning resource allocation in a developing nation. Critics often overlook the profound contributions of Hindu temples to India’s social, economic, and cultural fabric.

Hindu temples are not mere religious structures; they are centres of community service, employment generation, and public welfare. While some highlight the density of mosques and churches relative to Muslim and Christian populations, a closer examination reveals India’s unique religious harmony and the disproportionate contributions of Hindu institutions.

Places of Worship: A Comparative Perspective

Estimates of places of worship in India vary due to the inclusion of small shrines and unregistered sites, but reliable sources provide a broad picture. Hindu temples number around 700,000, with some estimates citing around 750,000 registered ones. Tamil Nadu alone has tens of thousands, reflecting deep-rooted traditions where even villages host multiple shrines……”
