Renowned Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty has alleged that she was verbally and physically harassed during a live performance at a private school event in Bhagwanpur, West Bengal, after she sang a devotional number.
The incident took place on December 20, 2025, at a cultural programme held at South Point Public School. Chakraborty had just performed the song “Jago Maa” from the film Devi Chowdhurani when a man later identified as Mehboob Mallik reportedly rushed the stage, confronted her aggressively, and demanded that she sing “something secular” instead.
According to the singer, Mallik charged toward her with the intention to hit her and shouted, “Enough of Jago Maa, now sing something secular.” People present at the event intervened and prevented the situation from escalating further.
Following the incident, Chakraborty went to the Bhagwanpur Police Station and filed a complaint. The local police have since arrested Mallik in connection with the case. The matter is under investigation, and local authorities are reviewing footage of the event and recording witness statements.
The incident has prompted public debate in West Bengal about freedom of artistic expression and cultural sensitivities during public performances, with social media users and commentators expressing widespread concern.
Chakraborty has expressed confidence in the police and the administration, stating she plans to continue performing the song in future shows and hopes for a safe environment for artists.
