The Hindu Heritage Centre in Rotorua had the honour of hosting Hon. Casey Costello, Minister for Seniors, on Friday, 14 February 2025. This visit provided an opportunity to showcase the Centre’s activities and highlight its contributions to the community, particularly in supporting older New Zealanders.





During the visit, Minister Costello engaged with key representatives of the Hindu Heritage Centre and affiliated organisations to better understand how the Centre fosters inclusivity and provides tailored support for seniors. The Minister’s discussions focused on initiatives that promote well-being, social connection, and cultural enrichment for the elderly.
Private Meeting with Key Representatives
The following individuals were invited to meet with Minister Costello to share their experiences and collaborative efforts with the Hindu Heritage Centre:
- Dr. Julia Anne – Manager, Hindu Heritage Centre (HHC), provided an overview of the Centre’s activities and community programs.
- Dr. Margriet Theron – President, Rotorua Multicultural Council, and supporter of HHC, spoke about initiatives such as the Rotorua Ethnic Market, International Coffee Painting Exhibition, and Community Garden.
- Rory O’Rourke and Karyn Rogers – Representatives from Age Concern, who use HHC for dance classes, cooking classes, and garage sale.
- Nilamani Wright – Representative of yoga community in Rotorua described the Hindu Heritage Centre as a welcoming space that fosters both physical and mental well-being.
- Sarah Roberts – Representative of meditation group highlighted the significance of HHC’s central location, stating that it attracts people from all directions. “It truly feels like our space,” she said.
- Dr. Guna Magesan – Speaking on behalf of the Hindu Elders Foundation Rotorua in the absence of the President and Secretary, shared plans to develop HHC into a multicultural hub where diverse ethnic communities can come together.
- Avinesh Gounder – representing the Rotorua Fiji Indian Association, noted that while Ramayan readings were previously held in other venues, the community is now working towards uniting different groups to recite the Ramayan collectively at HHC.
- Ms. Varsha Kaki – Welcomed the Hon. Minister on behalf of HHC. She shared her personal connection to the centre, recalling that it felt like home from the moment she attended her first International Day of Yoga event there.
After listening to the various key representatives, Hon. Casey Costello, Minister for Seniors, expressed her appreciation for the inclusive spirit of the Hindu Heritage Centre.
“It is truly heartening to see how different groups are coming together at the Hindu Heritage Centre, fostering a sense of unity and belonging. I have seen similar community-driven initiatives in other cities, where cultural centres play a vital role in strengthening social ties, promoting well-being, and providing essential services, especially for seniors. It is inspiring to witness the efforts here in Rotorua.”
Celebrating Cultural and Community Initiatives
The visit commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Hon. Minister. This marks the third visit by a Cabinet Minister to the Hindu Heritage Centre. Previously:
- Hon. Melissa Lee, Minister for Economic Development and Minister for Ethnic Communities, inaugurated the 2nd New Zealand Hindu Elders Conference at the Centre on 26 October 2024.
- Hon. Todd McClay, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Forestry, Minister for Trade and Investment, and Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs, was given a traditional welcome by HHC volunteers and presented with coffee paintings by Shri Uday Korde on 28 October 2024.
Community Garden and Sustainability Initiative
On 21 January 2025, a new Community Garden and Sustainability Initiative, designed to cultivate fresh vegetables while promoting environmental awareness, was inaugurated by Neeta Bhushan, High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, and Tania Tapsell, Mayor of Rotorua. The project was made possible by the Rotorua Lakes Council’s Community Matching Fund.
As part of her visit, Hon. Casey Costello had the honour of harvesting the first batch of silver beet from the Elders’ community garden, symbolising the Centre’s commitment to sustainability and senior well-being.
A Hub of Cultural Inclusivity and Community Engagement
The Hindu Heritage Centre stands as a beacon of cultural richness and inclusivity, dedicated to supporting youth, women, and the elderly. By offering a nurturing environment where individuals can learn, contribute, and engage, the Centre continues to strengthen the social fabric of Rotorua.
Reflecting on the occasion, Dr. Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, stated, “It’s heartwarming to see Hon. Ministers, the Indian High Commissioner, and the Rotorua Mayor visiting the Hindu Heritage Centre. As we continue to grow, we hope to welcome even more visitors who will experience the richness of our cultural and community initiatives.”
