Bangladesh: Symbolic hunger strike and mass sit-in protesting attempts to seize Hindu Debottar property

Various organizations including the Narayanganj’s Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Parishad, Awami League in Narayanganj have staged a symbolic hunger strike and mass sit-in program against the Narayanganj City Corporation mayor and her family in protest of attempts and threats to seize Hindu Debottar property.

The program was held at Chashara Shaheed Minar premises in Narayanganj on Wednesday afternoon.
Symbolic hunger strike and mass sit-in in protest of attempts to seize Hindu Debottar property was held at Chashara Shaheed Minar premises in Narayanganj on Wednesday afternoon Dhaka Tribune

The leaders present at the time demanded the recovery of the evicted Debottar property Zeus Pond of Lakshmi Narayan Akhra. At the same time, they strongly condemned the threat to demolish the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

District Puja Celebration Council President Deepak Kumar Saha presided over the function.

Narayanganj District Awami League General Secretary Abu Hasnat Shahid Badal, Narayanganj Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Ed. Khokon Saha, Narayanganj City Corporation Panel Mayor-2 Matiur Rahman Moti, Narayanganj District Ainjibi Samiti President Ed. Mohsin Mia, Liton Saha, among others were present at the protest.

At the protest, the leaders said, Mayor Ivy’s current activities are proof that she had not learnt anything  from history.

Earlier, in 1984, Ali Ahmed Chunka was also accused of occupying the Zeus Pond. And this is the reason why the people of Narayanganj did not elect him as the chairman of the municipality at that time.

Now Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Ivy is repeating that history. She has been in one of the posts of District Awami League for 18 years but she is not rescuing this land as she had promised while seeking votes from them before the election.

On the other hand, she along with others  are now trying to seize the property of Hindus. We strongly condemn his hypocrisy, they said.
