“Bangladesh, like many around the world, recently participated in the funeral and state mourning ceremonies of Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader assassinated in an American airstrike on February 28. The formal delegation that went at Iran’s invitation is led by Speaker of the Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad. However, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance also sent a separate delegation led by Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer and MP Prof. Mujibur Rahman to Tehran.

In its press release, Jamaat said that its delegation would attend the funeral and official ceremonies to express “deep condolences, sympathy and solidarity with the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran” following Khamenei’s death. Moreover, the delegation, which is likely to hold courtesy meetings with Iranian top leadership, also expressed its hope that this visit would further strengthen long standing Iran-Bangladesh bilateral cooperation and brotherly relations.

Jamaat also held a protest rally in Dhaka following Khamenei’s assassination, whereby the party not only condemned the joint attack by the US and Israel on Iran, but also called it an attack on “not only against Iran or the Muslim world, but on democracy, human rights and humanity”. While ATM Azharul Islam, Jamaat Nayeeb-e-Ameer, warned Israel that continued attacks (on Iran) would strengthen calls for boycott of Israeli products, he remained silent on the US, only acknowledging it as backing Israel and driving the conflict in the Middle East……..”
