Bangladesh: Signs of Brutality in the Body, Missing Hindu Sadhu Found Dead in Cox’s Bazar

A Hindu Sadhu who had been missing for three days was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hilly area of Cox’s Bazar district, police said.

The deceased, identified as Nayan Das (35), was a resident of Dohazari area under Satkania Upazila of Chattogram district and served as a priest (sebait) at a local temple in Khurushkul union under Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila.

According to local sources, the Sadhu went missing on the night of April 19 after several unidentified individuals reportedly called him out from his residence around 9:00 PM. When he did not return, family members searched for him and later filed a complaint with Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station on April 20.

On Wednesday noon, 22nd April, local residents conducting a search in a remote hilly area near the temple discovered his body hanging from a tree, with a cloth tied around his neck. The Police were informed and subsequently recovered the body from the scene.

The incident has triggered shock and concern in the area, with local Hindu minorities demanding a thorough investigation into what they describe as a “mysterious death.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamiuddin of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station stated that the body has been sent for autopsy. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the death was a suicide or a homicide, and further details will be determined following the investigation and post-mortem report.
