Bangladesh: Land of Hindu woman forcefully grabbed by Muslim neighbour

The interim government of Bangladesh has always been trying to establish that attacks on Hindus in the country result from individual circumstances rather than targeted communal violence. Religious affairs adviser AFM Khalid Hossain said, “

Minority persecution is not as high as foreigners say.” The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus slammed U.S. National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard’s remarks on the persecution of minority communities in Bangladesh.

But the reality is that the Hindus in Bangladesh are being attacked daily for being Hindu in a Muslim majority country.

Recently, Hindu students of Dhaka University protested against a Facebook post by Abu Sayem, a student of the Bangla department of the University, insulting Hindu deities, and a post by another Facebook user named Zaki Ahmed threatening to slaughter Hindus.

Bengali language national daily newspaper of Bangladesh, Protidiner Sangbad, has reported that the land of a helpless Hindu woman, Sandhya Rani Bishwas, was forcefully grabbed by her Muslim neighbour, Mukti Begum, in Raipura sub-district under Narsingdi district of central Bangladesh. Victim Sandhya Rani has submitted a written complaint to the assistant commissioner (land) and the executive magistrate regarding this matter.

The newspaper confirmed after an on-site inspection that the appropriator, Mukti Begum, has embezzled almost half of the 3 decimal land. One of their neighbours, Ferdousi Begum, told the reporter that almost half of Sandhya Rani’s property has been forcibly occupied by constructing a residence and bathroom.

When the newspaper asked, accused Mukti Begum said, “I own a small part of her property.”

Victim Sandhya Rani Biswas told the newspaper in Bangla that can be roughly translated as, “nearly half of the 3 decimal of my property land has been forcibly and illegally occupied by the accused Mukti Begum and her cohorts by constructing a house and bathroom for a pretty long time. Even though local arbitration body has ruled in my favor several times, they are not willing to accept it.”

Raipura sub-district assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Mohammed Masudur Rahman (Rubel), however, methodically recited, “I have received a written complaint from the victim Sandhya Rani against Mukti Begum regarding illegal land grabbing. Proper steps will be adopted after a fair investigation.”
