Awami League-linked local politician leads mob attack on Bangladeshi Hindus to grab land, 20 injured

Hindu-owned land has been grabbed through a violent mob attack organised by a local administrator linked to ruling Awami League in Bangladesh, online news-portal Northeast Now has reported in it’s Bengali edition.

The incident happened during the ongoing Corona crisis in Anwara sub-district under Chattogram (formerly Chittagong) district of south-eastern Bangladesh, when local union council chairman Mohammed Solaiman along with his 30-35 followers attacked Hindus with homemade sharp weapons & lathis during construction of the union council complex boundary. The Hindus protested their paternal land from being grabbed, and the attack left at least 20 Hindus injured, 3 of whom were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital as their condition was critical.

The area falls in the constituency of Bangladesh Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed, of Awami League party. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Karnaphuli police station refused to lodge a case in this regard, allegedly under pressure of a ruling party leader. Later, the case was lodged after repeated attempts.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) for Chattogram (south) chapter, Tapash Hore said, “Hindus are the owners of the 41 decimal land. Later, they bestowed 32 decimal land to the union council complex. But the current chairman wants to gobble up the rest area too in order to construct a market there.”

As per the news report, a compromise meeting in this connection was called in the office of sub-district magistrate along with Assistant Commissioner (land), Vice-Chairman of sub-district council & leaders of BHBCUC.

The Sub-district magistrate told Northeast Now that a decision had been taken in that meeting to confer the property right after land survey according to documents.
