200-year-old Shiva temple land grabbed by Islamists in Bangladesh’s Pirojpur

Days after Islamist bigots destroyed an under-construction Hindu temple in Islamabad, and video of a child tutored by his father threatening to hunt down all Hindus in Pakistan went viral, East Pakistan turned Bangladesh followed suit.

As per Bangladeshdarpan, in Pirojpur district of Bangladesh, the land of a 200-year-old Shiva temple that belonged to a well-known Hindu family has attracted the wrath of Islamists. Along with temple land, a portion of other land belonging to the family has also been forcibly grabbed by influential individuals of the area.

The incident took place at Pirojpur district’s Dighirjan village that falls under Nazirpur police station. The victim is no ordinary member of the minority community, but the principal of the local Shaheed Janani College, Shri Dipten Majumder. Majumder is also positioned as the Vice President of Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Parishad in the zone.

Dipten Majumdar stated that 11 per cent of his private property and 10 per cent of the 200-year-old Shiva temple owned by the family was demarcated by barbed wire and bamboo fencing. The details of the property and the Shiva temple are also documented in their name in the official records.

The incident took place on Monday, July 8th, at around 8 AM, when Tehsildar Md. Shahjahan Sheikh and Md. Hedayet Sheikh joined forces with the prime accused, Md. Kamrul Sheikh and took down the barbed wire and bamboo fencing to forcefully occupy the place.

Dipten Majumder arrived at the area and protested their act of vandalism. He claimed that the land they were trying to occupy was documented in the records in the name of the Majumders. He challenged the vandals to produce valid documents to establish their right over the land with corroborating pieces of evidence provided by the government or the administration.

But Kamrul Sheikh continued tearing down the fences forcefully. The Shaheed Janani College principal alleged that he was also threatened by the perpetrators and they hurled unspeakable profanities for the ladies of the Majumder family as well.

Locals allege no minority is spared the inhuman tortures inflicted by these unruly Islamists. Whether one is financially strong and commands a social status, or is poor and hapless, at the end of the day a Hindu is a Hindu, a wretched persecuted minority. They are tormented in different ways on different days. The drained members of the minority are at the end of their patience and wonder for how long they will have to put up with these daily agonies.

They are now committed to build unity and resist this injustice. Perhaps there is still time and if they don’t protest now, they will not be able to survive the land grabbers of Bangladesh.
