Islamist organisation PFI running terror camps in Kerala : reports

Islamists have targeted Kerala since last many years. A new development has come to light today which should concern us even more. In a raid by the forest department in Kollam district of Kerala, many parts of explosive devices including gelatin sticks and detonators were recovered from a forest. According to reports, these items were found in a camp being run by Islamist organisation PFI.

Kollam district is famous for cashew plantations and is often called the Cashew Capital of the World. Security agencies had inputs that infamous Islamist organisation PFI, was running suspicious training camps in Pathanapuram area of the district. It is reported that the camp was being run within the cashew plantations under the jurisdiction of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation.

It must be noted that PFI had first came to national prominance when its members had chopped the hand of a professor for setting a question paper with alleged derogatory references to Mohammed, prophet of Muslims, in 2010. The organisation has often been in news for unsavoury reasons.

In 2013, one of its camps in Narath, Kannur was raided by police and explosives and firearms were recovered. It has also been accused of sponsering forced conversions to Islam through a trust named Sathya Sarani. In a sting operation its women’s wing president AS Zainaba had admitted having performed forced religious conversions to Islam at a Sathya Sarani. The famous case of Akhila being brainwashed to become Hadiya also happened at the same place.

The organisation has been linked to Love Jihad/grooming of non-Muslim girls and also been alleged to be recruiting for to ISIS, the terrorist group. It was allegedly behind the campaign against people from north eastern states working in southern part of Bharat. It was also alleged to be the helping hand of banned terrorist organisation SIMI and helped to procure explosives for them for use in the 2011 Mumbai bombings, 2012 Pune blasts and 2013 Hyderabad Dilsukhnagar attack. Its members have allegedly committed dozens of murders of RSS and CPM men in Kerala.

More recently, it was the force behind the anti-CAA protests, which were centered near its headquarter in Shaheen Bagh, New Delhi. Its operatives were also arrested in UP in October 2020, while trying to foment violence in the wake of Hathras case. In many of these cases it is being investigated by ED, NIA and other agencies.

The recovery of explosives from the Islamist group should ring the bells in the security establishment. The 2019 amendments in UAPA should be invoked at this time to ban all the activities of this organisation and its sister NGOs. Its office bearers should be thoroughly investigated and their souces of funding identified and cut off to ensure the safety of nation.
