Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel including a sub-inspector rank official were martyred in an encounter with terrorists in Tripura on Tuesday, police said.
A police official in Agartala said that during patrolling, the suspected National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) terrorists attacked the BSF troopers at Manikpur village leading to a fierce encounter in which two para-military personnel were martyred on the spot.
The martyred BSF men include sub-inspector Bhuru Singh and constable Raj Kumar. The terrorists have taken away two sophisticated arms of the slain BSF jawans before they fled from the area, which is close to India-Bangladesh border under Dhalai district in northern Tripura.
BSF official said that as per the blood strains available at the spot, terrorists have reportedly sustained some injuries. Senior BSF and police officials have rushed to the spot, 150 km north of Agartala. Further details of the incidents are awaited.
The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) is a terror group which aims to ‘liberate’ the state of Tripura from Bharat. It has carried out numerous attacks on non-Christian tribals, Hindu spiritual leaders, and Bengali Hindus and is accused of forcing Tripura’s indigenous tribes to become Christians and give up Hindu forms of worship in areas under their control.
The NLFT manifesto says that they want to expand what they describe as the kingdom of God and Christ in Tripura.
In the past, Tripura’s previous CM Manik Sarkar, from CPM, had said state police had uncovered evidence, after questioning a church leader, that the state’s Baptist Church was involved in backing NLFT’s separatist terrorists. The church leader, Nagmanlal Halam, had been arrested with a large quantity of explosives. The Baptist Church in Tripura was set up by missionaries from New Zealand around 1940.
In 2017, NLFT along with other separatist terror groups had delivered a ‘final ultimatum’ to Hindi and Bengali speaking Hindus to quit parts of Assam and Tripura or face the “gravest of the grave” situations.
