Yogi amidst the intolerance of the opposition

It has just been two weeks since Yogi Adityanath has been sworn in as the CM of UP and already there are some scattered ramblings to be heard from the leftists and certain sections of the media.

The foundation of the issue lies in the selection of the CM face for the state. I fail to understand that isn’t the aforesaid the discretion of the party which has won the assembly elections and in this case with a sweeping margin. With whom the authority rests if not with the parliamentary board of the BJP? The opposition has surely not learnt a lesson that mere fear-mongering will take them nowhere. They tried to play the same trick in the just culminated elections and fell flat on their face.

New York Times in its editorial mentioned that the recent signs are dangerous for the Bharatiya political arena and that Bharat under the leadership of Modi is on the way of becoming a Hindu nation. Accepted that an editorial is a completely subjective entity and used for voicing a particular opinion, but at the same time it is also expected that a mainstream newspaper like the NY Times should respect the sovereignty of a country and its process of election. Retorting to the editorial, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Gopal Baglay addressed the media saying “ the wisdom in doubting the verdict of genuine democratic exercises, at home and abroad is questionable. ”

The India Today editor Rajdeep Sardesai  who is famous [read infamous] for his BJP bashing comments and for fanning sectarianism in the name of secularism made a gross comment misquoting Yogi that he had once said “Muslim women should be taken out of their graves and raped.” Later it came to light that the comment was fraudulent. The channel and the famous editor are now facing a law suit for the same. The Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) has sent an intimation of legal action stating “Mr Rajdeep Sardesai and India Today group are liable for prosecution under 30 various IPC Clauses and Cyber Crime clauses under Information Technology Act-2000, related to forgery, cheating, spreading rumors, creating and flaring up communal tensions and religious riots, and spreading lies through digital and electronic media.’’

An FIR has also been lodged against filmmaker Sirish Kunder in Hazratganj as a backlash against his tweet “Going by the logic of making a goon as CM so that he behaves, Dawood can be the CBI director, and Mallya the RBI Governor”. Later, he too had to apologize for his irresponsible remark. It seems that there exists intolerance for sure, but only in the eyes of the opposing forces.

Ever since taking oath Yogi Adityanath has spoken like a true statesman and as the CM of the entire UP population of 20 crore and not like the representative of a particular community. The first bite he gave to the media was “My government will work for everyone, not specifically for any caste or community. We will work for development of all sections and castes”.

In an endeavour to extend Modi’s nationwide agenda of development and fraternity, in his recent address, the Yogi also drew parallels between Surya Namaskar and Namaz saying that the postures of the Surya Namskar and Namaz are quite alike to each other. This was an attempt on his side to bring social harmony to society, but as they say one’s inference is as good as one’s spirit. The malice lies in the eyes of the ‘bhogis’ not ‘the Yogi’. It will only be just if we judge the newly crowned CM on the basis of the merit of his work and not on all the noise surrounding it. More on Yogi’s trend-setting administrative decisions in the coming article.
