A ‘North Indian’ shop owner was harassed and nearly assaulted by Dravidianists in Tamil Nadu for refusing to cough up money for their conference. They abused him saying, “You earn money from Tamils but you dare to refuse to give money for the conference?”. Other shop owners came to his support and their association has filed a complaint against the goondas.
A non-Tamil shop owner was harassed by Dravidianists in Tamil Nadu for refusing to cough up money for their conference. They abused him saying, “You earn money from Tamils but you dare to refuse to give money for the conference?”. Other shop owners came to his support and their association has filed a complaint against the goondas.
Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, an arm of Periyar’s Dravidar Kazhagam, is conducting a conference on April 29 and 30. Members of the outfit went around shops near Salem Old Bus Stand demanding donations to conduct the conference. They harassed the owners of wholesale textile shop owners to cough up money. They entered the shop of one Mahaveer and demanded Rs 500.
Mahaveer gave Rs 100 saying that as business has been dull he cannot afford to give more. Dravidianists abused the shop owner as a result of which an altercation ensued. In the video doing rounds on social media Mahaveer can be heard asking “Don’t you give respect even for one’s age? Are you doing rowdyism? What you are doing is indeed rowdyism” in perfect Tamil. A little later he calls the police helpline and complains about the goondagiri.
One of the Dravidianists says, “Call whomever you want. Do whatever you can. We will be around here” and leave the shop. Mahaveer called the police and asked “Should we live or not? Should we die? There is no law and order”. Later he sat on the road in protest to condemn police inaction. In a video shared by Dinamalar he says, “There is no law and order. Are you not taking action against them because he is a partyman?”.
Other shop owners joined him and registered their displeasure with the way Dravidianists acted and police response. They also lodged a complaint against Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam members for threatening and pressurising them to give money. Dravidian organisations are the main source of hatred against people from other states. They have been even more emboldened with DMK in power.
Even after the recent issue of attacks on migrant workers, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, another arm of Dravidar Kazhagam, laid siege to the Governor’s residence against “Brahmin- North Indian dominance in central government offices and PSUs” in TN.
