Inspired by WB & Kerala, Punjab, Telangana and Maharashtra are seeing increasing attacks on BJP workers

Violent attacks on BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) workers and leaders are being witnessed in several states across Bharat. The spurt in such attacks should be a cause of concern for the party leadership.

Earlier this month, a video of Telangana state unit chief Bandi Sanjay being brutally assaulted and arrested came to light. What’s worse? TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samiti) MLA Jeevan Reddy justified the violence and even threatened “Telangana BJP members will meet the same fate as that faced by the 975 party workers from West Bengal”. It must be mentioned that unprecedented post-poll violence in West Bengal saw party workers being murdered and raped.

Under the ‘secular’ MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) government, harassment of opposition leaders and workers has become a regular affair. BJP leader Jiten Gajaria was detained and interrogated by the Mumbai police for allegedly posting objectionable content against CM Uddhav Thackeray’s wife Rashmi Thackeray. Following this, another case was registered by the Pune Police against Gajaria for the post.

OpIndia report in the matter notes:

The case pertains to tweets posted by Jiten Gajaria on January 4, following which he was detained and interrogated by the Mumbai Police on Thursday this week. Talking to OpIndia, Pratik Karpe said that a team of three officers of the Maharashtra police reached Jiten Gajaria’s office in the morning at around 10 am on January 5. They were not carrying any legal notice or warrant against Jiten Gajaria, yet they picked him up from his office and brought him to the cyber police station, BKC in Mumbai where he was put through the wringer for over three hours.

The arbitrary action being taken against the BJP leader by the Maharashtra police, and now by the Pune Police, was for two Tweets Gajaria had posted on January 4. In his first Tweet, Gajaria had referred to Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray’s wife Rashmi Thackeray as Maharastra’s Rabri Devi.

Similarly, BJP’s Sandeep Mhatre was arrested by the police for ‘sharing an objectionable’ post. An FIR was registered against Mhatre under sections 153A, 500 of IPC and he is currently in police custody said Navi Mumbai DCP (Crime) Suresh Mengade. However, such a high-handed fascist attitude is nothing new for the MVA government as was evident in the manner in which Republic TV‘s Arnab Goswami had been grilled by the Mumbai Police for asking tough questions to Congress’ Italian-born Sonia Gandhi.

Congress hadn’t even spared its ally, Shiv Sena, as was seen from the fact that Congress leader Nitin Raut had warned Sena’s Sanjay Raut that Congress is not like BJP and won’t tolerate insult to its leaders. Raut had issued a warning to Shiv Sena spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut in January last year for exposing Indira Gandhi’s links with gangster Karim Lala. He had taunted the Shiv Sainik, long accustomed to taking potshots at the Modi Government even though Shiv Sena was then in alliance with BJP in both Maharashtra and center, that “we aren’t like BJP, we won’t tolerate it lying down..we know how to hit back hard.” In fact, immediately afterward, Sanjay Raut even issued a meek apology and retracted his statement against Indira Gandhi.

The situation in Punjab is no different with no less than the Punjab CM himself making light of PM Modi’s security breach. “Did a bullet hit, did someone throw a stone”, CM Channi asked. When the state’s top leadership itself believes that attacking the PM and holding him hostage doesn’t amount to a threat to his life, no wonder BJP workers are being heckled and threatened. It is therefore hardly surprising that incidents such as tearing down posters of the party in the run-up to the assembly elections and harassment of party workers have become a daily affair in Congress-ruled Punjab.

Hatred for and violence against BJP workers and leaders was normalized in Bengal and Kerala in the name of fighting ‘fascist’ and ‘communal’ forces. The same model is now being extended to every ‘secular’ state to put an end to opposition using ‘fighting communalism’ as a convenient excuse. This is nothing but normalizing hate for a section of citizens who choose to follow and support a particular ideology. Democracy certainly doesn’t appear to be under threat when those whose ideology is different are shut up using violence and intimidation.
