Omar Abdullah keeps harping about Article 370, wants state to continue mollycoddling stone pelters

National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah batted for anti-national elements as he went about his usual rant of “trust deficit” in Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370. Abdullah opined that though he was open to the idea of correction to Article 35A, he wasn’t ready for its abrogation and added that removing Article 370 hasn’t helped.

The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration, which includes Abdullah’s National Conference and is headed by Omar’s father and former CM Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti’s Peoples Democratic Party, and other Opposition parties, aims at restoring special status along with Article 35A of Jammu and Kashmir.

He used the often used UN-mandated plebiscite in order to justify the continuation of Article 370 and that the accession was neither temporary nor confined to a particular generation. Abdullah said “It was supposed to be ratified through United Nations-mandated plebiscite. Circumstances that led to accession were not temporary. Was Article 370 meant for a particular generation? It wasn’t told to us in 1947 that J&K accession was time-bound. It was promised that J&K will have a separate status”.

Omar Abdullah has probably not read the provisions of the Article wherein its temporary nature has been clearly stated by the makers of our constitution:

Notwithstanding anything in the foregoing provisions of this article, the President may, by public notification, declare that this article shall cease to be operative or shall be operative only with such exceptions and modifications and from such date as he may specify: Provided that the recommendation of the Constituent Assembly of the State referred to in clause ( 2 ) shall be necessary before the President issues such a notification.

Therefore, Abdullah’s allegations that the promise made to Jammu and Kashmir by Bharat’s Union Government has been broken doesn’t hold water. For far too long Kashmir’s politicians have been using the bogey of special status to breed anti-national elements and keep both Jammu and Ladakh underdeveloped.

Abdullah also supported stone-pelters as he slammed the move of the J&K (Jammu & Kashmir) government to deny passports and jobs for those involved in stone-pelting. CID (Criminal Investigation Department) issued the order on behalf of the union territory government saying security clearance should be denied to all those against whom there are digital or police records of involvement in stone-pelting and other subversive activities.

The order further said if there was any digital evidence such as CCTV footage, photographs, videos, audio clips, or quadcopter images available in the police records, then it should be referred to the security forces and the security agencies. Any subject found involved in any such cases must be denied security clearance.

It must be noted that security clearances are essential before the issuance of a passport and appointment to government jobs in the union territory. In May this year, an order was passed ordering the removal of government employees whose involvement in anti-national activities or actions endangering the security of the country was proved.

Abdullah’s tweet reads “As a rule, no one can be declared guilty until proven. So, as far as this new order is concerned, it should be seen in relation to the recent order on termination of employees. As such, this new order also seems open to gross misuse in its current form”.

This again brings to the fore how Kashmiri politicians have covertly supported and mollycoddled anti-national elements who pose a grave threat to the nation’s safety and security.
