More hooliganism from MVA workers, this time in Pune

MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) hooliganism graph in Maharashtra is continually showing an upward trend with ample covert and overt support from the ruling dispensation. The latest report of hooliganism by MVA has come from Maharashtra’s cultural capital Pune that was recently rocked by a shocking case of a minor’s gang rape.

MVA workers attack FB page admin

Abhijeet Limaye, the admin of FB (Facebook) page Lakhoba Lokhande, was taken into custody by the Pune Police Cyber cell on the basis of the complaint by NCP workers for supposedly posting ‘offensive’ comments against MVA leaders.

TV9 Marathi report on the matter states that Abhijeet Limaye who had allegedly issued a challenge stating that if he was arrested, a prize of INR 100 crores would be given was arrested from Sangli on 18 September as NCP workers had demanded action against him.

However, MVA hooliganism was on display in the court premises itself indicating the deteriorating law and order condition in Maharashtra as Limaye was attacked in the court premises. MVA workers blackened his face as Pune police brought him to the court and forced him to issue an apology stating he wouldn’t comment against MVA.

In what is nothing but extremely shameful, the MVA workers went on to say that they would deal with those commenting against their leaders who attained ‘great heights’ in politics due to their ‘hard work’ in such a manner. If this isn’t a mockery of freedom of speech then what is?

Furthermore, it is extremely appalling that the incident took place within the court premises that too in the presence of the police which is indicative of the complete breakdown of law and order in the state. It also gives rise to the question as to how the police have been a mute spectator when attacks have taken place before them (remember the mob lynching of Hindus in Palghar in police presence?).

Incidents of MVA hooliganism

Dissent is a part of a healthy democracy but MVA can’t take criticism even as their leaders including Chief Minister (CM) Uddhav Thackeray himself keeps passing unparliamentary remarks against opposition politicians and cabinet ministers such as Jitendra Awhad get ordinary citizens thrashed only because they demanded accountability from the government.

That the law and order in the state have gone downhill under the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government comes to the fore from the series of physical assaults against both common citizens and leaders and workers associated with the BJP and RSS.

  1. September 2020 – Navy veteran assaulted for sharing WhatsApp (WA) forward alleging ‘derogatory’ depiction of CM Uddhav Thackeray. What can be more shameful than workers of the ruling MVA dispensation being punched in the eye because he shared a cartoon depicting Thackeray’s reality?
  2. April 2020- Thane resident Anant Karmuse abducted and beaten black and blue at MVA minister Jitendra Awhad’s Thane bungalow
  3. February 2021- BJP leader Satish Katekar assaulted in Pandharpur for raising his voice against inflated electricity bills. Katekar was forced to wear bangles (considered a sign of weakness by misogynists) and a saree was draped around his head. He was paraded in public and the goons sloganeered in unison
  4. August 2021 – BJP leader Kirit Somaiya who has been systematically exposing the corruption of the MVA government was attacked as stones were pelted and black ink was thrown on his car in Washim
  5. December 2019 – Wadala resident Hiramani Tiwari was physically assaulted and his head was shaven by Sena goons for his comment against Uddhav Thackeray

Several citizens are now raising questions regarding BJP and Sangh’s passivity in dealing with rising instances of assault and humiliation of their cadres such as the instance of Union Minister Narayan Rane being taken into custody in a display of highhandedness.

The manner in which BJP supporters, particularly on social media (SM), have faced threats and been arrested by the Maharashtra police at the instance of the MVA government brings to light not just MVA’s arrogance of power but also BJP’s inability to send a stern message that harming their workers and supporters will not be accepted.

The fighting spirit that defined Sangh organizations like Bajrang Dal and VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) in the 80s and 90s seems to be missing now. It is important for the party to stand by its workers and supporters and assure them of safety.
