As a fallout of the SUV case, Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh has been replaced by Hemant Nagrale. Singh has been transferred to Homeguards as the Director-General. This comes amid the fallout among Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress in the last couple of weeks following the arrest of Sachin Vaze by NIA.
Reporting on the issue, India TV says:
On Tuesday, Param Bir Singh met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Sources said Singh met Thackeray at the latter’s official residence ‘Varsha’ here on Tuesday night.
Vaze was directly reporting to Param Bir Singh. And, it was the Param Bir-headed review committee that reinstated Sachin Vaze after 16 years despite a court order against the cop.
While the move to replace Param Bir Singh is welcome, it does indicate that strings of MVA are being pulled by NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar as such transfers cannot take place without the approval of the state’s Home Minister and political bigwigs of the ruling coalition. The transfer comes in the background of the meeting between NCP Supremo Pawar and CM Uddhav Thackeray at the latter’s Varsha bungalow on Monday.
