Motormouth parliamentarian from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Mahua Moitra, is always in the headlines but never for bringing ground-breaking development to her constituency. TMC leaders have made a hobby out of demeaning Hindu Gods, be it Bhagwan Ram, Bhagwan Shiv, or Maa Kali, and Moitra has always been in the headlines for her disparaging commentary on Hindu deities and mockery of Hindu sentiments.
Weeks after sacrilegiously likening the Bhabha Atomic Research Center to the Shivalinga, Moitra denigrates Maa Kali with her outrageous claims. While speaking at India Today Conclave East 2022 on Tuesday, July 5, Mahua Moitra opined that for her the Hindu Devi represented a meat-eating, alcohol-imbibing goddess. “When you go to Sikkim, you will see that they offer whiskey to Goddess Kaali. But if you go to Uttar Pradesh, and if you tell them that you offer whiskey to the goddess as ‘prasad’, they will call it blasphemy,” she added.
She received immense backlash from Hindus after her absurd claims made it to social media. It was interesting to see netizens asking the right questions. While the anti-Hindu and secessionist cabal in Bengal has consistently denounced the existence of Bhagwan Ram, asserting that they are the worshippers of Durga and Kali, it is unfortunate that members of this cabal didn’t question the TMC MP on her disrespectful claims on goddess Kali.
Some netizens also mocked this cabal, stating they have lined up to get the 500 rupees allowance that Mamata Banerjee provides in the name of Lakkhi’r Bhandar to the people of Bengal challenged with unemployment.
Others pointed out that this part of the society is non-responsive to the insults to their most significant spiritual figures highlighting the weak protest in Bengal after a TMC leader stated that Mamata Banerjee is the reincarnation of Maa Sarada.
However, the fact is that the devotees of Maa Kali and Durga are not limited to West Bengal. The Hindus in other states were angry with the flippant leader for her sacrilegious remarks on the revered Devi.
Though TMC’s official handle issued a statement distancing itself from the remark made by their sitting MP, WB chief Mamata Banerjee maintained an uncomfortable silence. The leader who had demanded the arrest of Nupur Sharma repeatedly and held her responsible for the riots by Islamists in her state conveniently shied away from reprimanding her party member.
It must be highlighted that the BJP had dismissed Nupur Sharma from her position as the BJP spokesperson after her remarks on the Prophet of Islam. However, the most prominent critic of Sharma, the TMC camp, shows no sign of taking any official actions against their “repeat offender” parliamentarian who has insulted Bhagwan Shiv and Maa Kali in the past couple of months.
Again, it is not wise to expect much from a political party that had awarded a small-time Bengali actress a ticket to contest the election after she rose to infamy by posting a picture of a condom on the Shivalinga.
BJP MLA Vivekananda Bauri and BJP leader Jiten Chatterjee have filed FIRs against Moitra in West Bengal. Bauri has also mentioned that Hindus would democratically protest against the TMC MP if no action was taken against her. As per reports, the Bhopal Police booked Moitra under section 295A of the Indian Penal Code.
However, adamant in her discourse, instead of being apologetic about her statement – like Nupur Sharma did – Moitra flaunted more arrogance. Showing no consideration for the Hindu sentiments, she challenged the BJP to “bring it on” and stated, “truth doesn’t need back up.” She also asserted that she is a “Kali worshipper.”
Compared to the Nupur Sharma situation, the TMC MP said, “Nupur Sharma Denigrated Prophet, I Celebrated Goddess”. She said to NDTV, “I’m not scared! I’m not in hiding like Nupur Sharma! Nobody has given me security! I’m sitting in my bedroom in my constituency in Karimpur, Nadia… So bring it on…”
Now Mahua Moitra knows that no Hindu will go out with a machete to behead for her claims about Maa Kali. Unlike Nupur Sharma, who got death and rape threats from Islamists for repeating what is mentioned in the religious texts of Islam, Mahua Moitra doesn’t have a threat to her life. Therefore, she can act brave when there is absolutely no threat to her or her supporters, no matter how many times she disrespects Hindu Dharma in the garb of being a Hindu.
Small-time actresses like Swara Bhaskar jumped to extend support to the MP, but her efforts mattered little. Netizens were quick to call out her hypocrisy.
The haughtiness and arrogance of Mahua Moitra expose the rot and hypocrisy in the TMC. It will be worth waiting to see the TMC take stern action against Moitra. And if it doesn’t, it loses its ground to make any comment on the Nupur Sharma fiasco hereafter.
