Punjab: Congress CM Channi and Sonu Sood to be chief guests in controversial evangelist Pastor Bajinder Singh’s event

An invitation card of ‘Prophet Bajinder Singh Ministries’ is doing the rounds on social media (SM) regarding the inauguration of the organization’s branch in Moga in which Congress CM Channi and Sonu Sood among others find mention.

A YouTube advertorial regarding the inaugural event set to take place on November 25 stated that attendees would witness ‘miracles’ by Bajinder Singh. It further claimed Singh would heal people with cancer, disabilities, and possessions. Singh has been accused of converting people to Christianity by making false promises.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Congress MLA Harjot Kamal, actor Sonu Sood and his sister Malvika Sood, who would be contesting the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections from Moga, have been mentioned in the invitation card although the YouTube video doesn’t mention the same.

“What does it say about #Congress CM? What does it say of the party? What does it say of SGPC Amritsar, Sukhbir Singh Badal, and Akali Dal who hate & abuse RSS for stressing Sikh Hindu unity but silent on this blatant conversion game?”, opined Shri Ratan Sharda while adding asking if Channi has become a disciple of ‘prophet’ Singh.

It must be mentioned Singh of ‘mera yeshu yeshu‘ video fame has also been accused of murder and rape. There are also accusations against him of duping people of money under the pretext of ‘miraculous healing’. The Punjab police had been instructed by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to register a case under POCSO in August this year when videos emerged showing Singh using a minor boy for forceful religious conversion activity.

“The ‘healer baba’ surprisingly has over 1 million subscribers on YouTube and over 2 lakh followers on Facebook. His social media pages mostly consist of testimonials and claims of curing illnesses like HIV infections, paralysis by simply applying his prayed anointing oil, curing a deaf and dumb child by using the same oil”, says the report by OpIndia.

In recent times, there has been a spurt in Christian evangelical activities in Punjab. The conversion mafia in the state has been actively converting people leading to 10% of the state’s population now being Christians. With Sonia Gandhi supposedly selecting a crypto-Christian to lead the state, Congress appears to be leading Punjab down the Andhra path where crypto-Christianity is rampant.

Controversial Christian activist John Dayal, who rose to prominence under Sonia Gandhi’s UPA regime, explains the concept of ‘Crypto Christians’ in Bharat who he says “live a unique double life, Hindus in the public domain, and on official records, while privately professing faithfulness to Jesus Christ.” In a 2014 article written for a German Federal Government site, Dayal had written –

These are communities, specially in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, who avoid registering themselves officially as such in order to continue taking advantage of government’s affirmative action programmes that include reservations in academic institutions, the civil service, and legislatures.

There are at least two instances that indicate that Punjab CM Channi is probably a crypto-Christian. While interviewing Channi’s wife after his appointment as CM, Sudarshan News TV channel observed a Christian cross with a crucified Jesus hanging on the wall. An image has also surfaced which shows Punjab’s new CM Charanjit Singh Channi at an event by one Pastor Hans, who was reportedly trained by evangelist Ankur Narula.

Channi’s name appearing in the Bajinder Singh evangelical event invite raises several questions. There appears to be a conscious attempt by Congress to promote Christianity which is probably to be expected under Sonia Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi’s appointment of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy unleashed a wave of bigoted, poisonous Christian evangelism in undivided Andhra Pradesh, and that work is now being carried forward by YSR’s son Jagan Reddy. It is also pertinent that Punjab’s number one proselytizer Ankur Narula started in 2008, during UPA-1, with 3 followers and has witnessed explosive growth since.
