Congress-ruled states are among the worst-performing ones as the second wave of Chinese Covid Virus hits Bharat. The Centre has released data analysis that indicates the states of Punjab, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra where Congress is the ruling party or part of the ruling coalition have been categorized as “cause of maximum concern”.
Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has issued a statement saying that the number of deaths reported from Punjab and Chhattisgarh is extremely worrisome particularly when their population is taken into consideration. Bhushan further added, “if we look at Punjab, three percent of the total cases are being reported from Punjab now and it accounts for 4.5 percent of the total fatalities in the country”.
Central government data shows that the average daily cases and deaths reported every day have increased 11 and 7 times respectively in a mere span of eight weeks. Even the daily average deaths in Punjab have seen a 7-fold increase from 8 per day in February to 58 per day in March-April. In fact, in the last 24 hours, 62 deaths and 2924 additional cases have been reported from Punjab. The maximum cases and deaths in Punjab have been reported from the districts of Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Rupnagar (Ropar), SAS Nagar (Mohali), Jalandhar, SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur.
Chhatisgarh has a population of fewer than three crores and yet it remains one of the worst performing states having recorded figures of 55,512 cases and close to 500 deaths in a month. Furthermore, the state has run out of ICU beds and is even struggling to get people to hospitals on time.
State Health Minister TS Singh Deo concurred that the state was struggling with ICU bed availability. The Print quotes the minister:
“We have 80-90 percent occupancy, and soon we may reach a point where we won’t have beds,” he said. “Additionally, this time people are coming late, often when their oxygen saturation is down to even 60 percent. Somewhere there is a big hesitation to go to hospital as if you will get locked in a jail.”
Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi is one of the worst performing governments where PR exercises trump governance. The Covid situation in Maharashtra ranks among the worst in the country with Mumbai and Pune alone reporting more than 10000 and 11000 cases in the last 24 hours. More than 55,000 cases have been reported from Maharashtra in the last 24 hours and the hospitals in the state are falling short of oxygen.
Data released by the Centre shows that 8 among the top 10 worst-affected districts are from Maharashtra. Even as cases are rising and healthcare in the state is crumbling, the MVA government is embroiled in one or another controversy while governance has gone for a toss.
50 high-level public health teams, that will monitor the overall implementation of Covid-19 management, have been rushed by the PM Modi-led Central Government to the states of Punjab, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra on Monday (April 5) night in view of the downward spiraling Covid situation in these states. The teams have been tasked with implementing control and containment measures.
While the Central government has stepped in to ensure damage control by sending public health teams, the present mismanagement in states where Congress is in power, either by itself or in alliance, governance is always a casuality. Governance suffers when power is in the hands of Congress CMs who owe their allegiance to the crooked and disconnected first family as in Punjab and Chhattisgarh or corrupt coalitions lusting for power form alliances with Congress bereft of any ideology as is being seen in Maharashtra.
Neither Congress CMs Amarinder Singh and Bhupesh Baghel nor Congress supported CM Uddhav Thackeray have been focussed on ensuring good governance. Singh was more interested in encouraging farmer protests against the much-needed farm reform bills, in addition, to indirectly promoting Khalistani elements. The Punjab CM was more focused on saving dreaded UP don Mukhtar Ansari than the crumbling health infrastructure.
Singh’s Chhattisgarh counterpart Bhupesh Baghel, on the other hand, is another Nehru family loyalist embroiled in numerous corruption cases. There are several criminal cases against Baghel who has also made some controversial decisions and appointments. His father Nand Kumar Baghel, on the other hand, has been spewing venom against Hindus while justifying Naxal and Islamic violence. At a time when his state is reeling under Covid, Baghel has been campaigning in Assam.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra has been concentrating its energies on extracting (vasooli) 100 crores every month from dance bars and restaurants in Mumbai while the state has topped the charts of Covid cases.
When Congress and shaky coalitions that are bereft of any positive ideology for the nation and led by a crooked, disconnected first family, come to power then the focus of every Congress or Congress supported CM is on anything but good governance like the citizens of Punjab, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra are witnessing.
