BJP woman candidate Krishna Bhattacharya (59) badly beaten up by TMC goons: Kolkata, WB

BJP candidate from Ward 10 at Konnagar – Krishna Bhattacharya (59) – was beaten up by TMC goons and had to be hospitalised on Saturday night with leg injuries. Local BJP leaders blamed TMC leader Tanmay Deb, contesting from the same ward. TMC denied any role and alleged “theatrics” by BJP.

This is the second time that the elderly woman has been attacked by TMC workers – bombs were hurled and she was brutally assaulted inside her home in January 2017 following TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay’s arrest in the Rose Valley chit fund scam.

The area comes under Hooghly district and also comes under Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. DM and returning officer P D Epap Priya said they have started a probe. Four persons have been detained for questioning. The last phase of polling in West Benga’s municipal polls had concluded on Sunday, February 27.

On Saturday, around 11.20 pm, Krishna Bhattacharya was making rounds of the ward at the Bengal Fine Mor when a group attacked her. Local BJP leaders called up police and she was rushed to a private hospital. “She is now traumatised and under treatment at a hospital,” said Shamik Bhattacharya, Bangal BJP spokesperson.

In a separate incident, Dhuliyan in Murshidabad district turned into a battleground on Sunday when Trinamool workers clashed with Congress activists and supporters of Independent candidates. Cops were attacked and at least four police personnel were injured. Constable N K Hansda received injury on his left eye and his condition is critical. Shamsergunj TMC MLA Amirul Islam said police should be been “more proactive”.

As with all other elections under the fascist TMC regime, these municipal polls have also seen widespread violence, voter and Opposition intimidation and rigging. Despite mountains of evidence and past history of pre and post poll violence under TMC rule, an SC bench led by Justice Chandrachud refused to deploy central forces as requested by Opposition.

Counting of votes for these polls is underway today. Not surprisingly, TMC is heading towards a ‘clean sweep’.
