BJP’s Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal suspended after uproar on Arab Twitter

BJP has suspended Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal following uproar from Islamic nations on Twitter. BJP acting under pressure from the Muslim world not just sends out a wrong message but also puts the Bharatiya government on the backfoot. Nupur Sharma has been receiving threats from Islamists after POCSO accused Zubair shared a heavily edited clip of the BJP spokesperson.

“In its suspension letter, the BJP told Sharma that she has expressed views contrary to the party’s on various matters which violate the party’s constitution. Though there is no official word from the party, it is believed that the action against Sharma has been taken in context to her statement against Prophet Mohammed during a debate on Times Now”, notes OpIndia.

Qatar had summoned Bharat’s ambassador to officially condemn BJP leaders’ comments on Mohammed. Even Kuwait has demanded an apology. It has further come to light that Muslim Brotherhood is behind the Twitter storm targeting Bharat over the Mohammed controversy. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a statement calling out the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)’s comment on Bharat. It said that OIC’s comments as “motivated, misleading, and mischievous”.

Nupur Sharma put out a Twitter statement in Hindi saying she was provoked into responding to the constant jibes directed at Bhagwan Shiva. “I’ve been attending TV debates for the last few days when everyday insults are heaped on my Bhagwan Shiv…I couldn’t bear these constant insults directed at my Bhagwan. Hence, I said things in a fit of rage”, her statement says. She even apologized for ‘hurting’ religious sentiments.

Naveen Jindal also urged social media users not to make his address public since he was getting death threats. “I have a special request to everyone, please do not make my address public. I am getting death threats for my family and me continuously on social media too”, Jindal tweeted.

Both the BJP leaders and their families have been receiving death threats. Islamists often issue such beheading threats and resort to violence. Street violence and vandalism have become a regular feature of Islamists the world over. However, the response from the ruling party should have been more measured. A stern message has to be sent to the Islamists and the secular Indian state has been consistently failing in it.

The murders of Samuel Paty and Kamlesh Tiwari for allegedly insulting Mohammed and the contrast in response by France and Bharat respectively highlight why Islamists have been emboldened in Bharat. The entire episode also brings to the fore the hypocrisy of the Arab world. The Islamic nations have one set of rules for themselves and hold Bharat to quite another standard.
