Prime accused Abdul Kareem and son Riyasudheen absconding in pregnant elephant murder

The two prime accused, Ambalappara native Abdul Kareem and son Riyasudheen, in the death of pregnant elephant Vinayaki who died painfully after consuming an explosive laden coconut are absconding as per the investigating team, reports Mathrubhumi.

The third accused, Wilson (35) a native of Edavanna in Malappuram district, was arrested on Friday. He worked as a tapper in the rubber plantation owned by Kareem and stayed in a shed on the estate. Remains of the explosive were found from this shed during evidence collection.

The Mathrubhumi article adds –

“According to veterinarians who carried out the autopsy of the dead 15-year-old pregnant elephant, she had consumed a coconut with firecrackers on May 12 that burst inside her, leaving her in pain for days. She took refuge in a river until her death. The explosion inside her mouth had seriously injured her upper and lower jaw and tongue.”

The 15-year-old elephant died on May 27 in the buffer zone of Silent Valley National Park (SVNP) in Palakkad district, standing in Velliyar river with its trunk submerged to alleviate some of its pain. The incident was brought to light by Mohan Krishnan, Section Forest Officer, Nilambur, on his Facebook page.

The article says officials surmise the elephant’s killers must have first tried chasing her away as she strayed into agricultural land and then fed her the live explosives.

However, according to an Indian Express report, Mannarkkad forest range officer Ashique Ali U, who is probing the case, said the accused wanted to trap wild boar using the explosive-loaded coconut, but it was accidentally bitten by the elephant –

The officer said, “They (the accused) have a habit of hunting wild boars and used to sell its meat… Kareem’s 15 acres of rubber plantation is close to the forest. To trap wild boar, they had packed potassium-nitrate in a ball shape within a coconut… However, the coconut was accidentally bitten by the elephant… They had placed the trap within the forest region, not on their farm land.”

Another senior forest official told The New Indian Express that this is not the first time an elephant met its death due to an explosion in its mouth caused by crude country bombs or firecrackers being used in snares to catch wild boars by people.

In April also, another wild elephant in Pathanapuram in Kollam district had died in similar circumstances. Samuel Pachuau, Wildlife Warden, SVNP, said “We have increased our intelligence networking as well as boundary patrolling as the incident has happened between the park (which is on the buffer zone) and the plantation areas.”

Vinayaki’s death had touched the heart of millions across the country. In Feb 2018, a similarly shocking incident had been reported from Palakkad district when 27-year-old tribal youth Madhu was tied, tortured and lynched to death by a Muslim mob over accusation of stealing 1 kg of rice.

The pregnant elephant’s death also led to ex-Union Minister and BJP MP Maneka Gandhi labelling Malappuram district “India’s most violent district” (Palakkad and Malappuram are adjoining districts) claiming, “No action has ever been taken against a single poacher or wildlife killer there”. She also referred to the high crime rate and communal conflict in the district.

Last year 15 stray dogs were allegedly hammered to death in Malappuram. The district is also a stronghold of the radical Islamist organisation PFI which runs a Muslim religious centre Sathya Sarani, in Manjeri town of the district, used to indoctrinate neo-converts to Islam.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, CPM leaders and liberal-seculars immediately jumped to condemn Maneka Gandhi’s “communal” remark and an FIR was duly filed against her. The MP, who recently faced flak from Hindus for her distorted understanding of the principle of karma and rebirth, is known for her radical animal activist streak. But her comments do carry a grain of truth.

As this Swarajya article informs us –

“Tamil and Malayalam writer B Jeyamohan says the elephant murder took place, probably, as part of expansion of agricultural activities in the Western Ghats area, mostly by settler farmers. He says the Kerala government has silently approved the hunting down of wild boars as they destroy various root crops grown by the tribals on the ghats.

Political experts say that in the Western Ghats, particularly the Silent Valley, the settler or tenant farmers are mostly Syrian Christians who have encroached forest lands. The CPM had joined hands with the church against preserving the sensitive areas in the Western Ghats, which includes the Silent Valley.

Both had opposed the recommendations of the 2011 Western Ghats Ecology Experts Panel report, submitted by Madhav Gadgil and another report submitted by space scientist K Kasturirangan.

In view of a large number of Christians being involved in farming in the ecologically sensitive region in the region, the church has opposed the Gadgil and Kasturirangan reports.”

Another aspect of this whole episode which has been ignored by mainstream media is the usual ‘communalisation’ by Hinduphobes and page-3 celebs.

Elephant murder

For ill-informed bigots like Bhatt (her father has said even worse to Hindus and not once uttered a word about the fact that his son Rahul Bhatt played host to terrorist David Headley aka Daood Gilani when the latter was doing reconnaissance for the 26/11 Mumbai attack), everything wrong in the country is due to Hindus and Hindu Dharma, while left-liberals/atheists/Abrahamics carry the burden earlier held by the White Man to ‘civilize’ the country.

Will Pooja Bhatt and her ilk issue an apology to Hindus for taking a dig at their sacred icons & beliefs, now that the accused in the pregnant elephant Vinayaki’s death have been proven to be 2 Muslims and a Christian?

But whatever the politics around the issue, we hope that the entire country soon rediscovers our Dharmic roots which state that humans are just a tiny part of the cosmos and we share the same divine consciousness with other living beings. Flora and fauna are not created merely for man’s usage and enjoyment, as some scriptures and Western ideologies have led the world to believe.
