“Felt as if we were not in our own country:” BJP leader over attack in South 24 Parganas, WB

In yet another attack on BJP leaders and workers in West Bengal, a convoy of top leaders including national President JP Nadda was attacked with bricks as they were driving through Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district to address party workers for the Bengal elections in 2021.

“I have been injured in this attack. The party president’s car was also attacked. We strongly condemn it. In the presence of police, goons attacked us. It felt as if we were not in our own country:” BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya, national general secretary and party in-charge of West Bengal, said while also sharing a video of the attack on twitter.

As the convoys of JP Nadda and Vijayvargiya were headed towards Diamond Harbour on Thursday, TMC protesters holding TMC flags gathered on the streets and attempted to block the road to stop the convoy from passing. They also pelted bricks at the vehicles. Videos show the badly damaged windscreen and windows of a car, with one brick landing inside.

“This was a pre-planned attack, the police were helping the protestors. Many BJP workers have been injured. There is no democracy in West Bengal,” said BJP leader Anupam Hazra.

“There isn’t a car in our convoy which was not attacked. I am safe because I was travelling in a bulletproof car. This state of lawlessness and intolerance in West Bengal has to end…Mukul Roy and Kailash Vijayvargiya were injured in the attack today, ” said BJP President JP Nadda.

WB Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar again expressed his concern at the reports of anarchy and lawlessness. On Monday, BJP worker Ulen Roy had died in Siliguri during a rally allegedly due to police firing. His post-mortem was hurriedly carried out in dead of the night, prompting demands from Ulen’s family for a second videographed post-mortem which a local court has now ordered.

TMC leader Madan Mitra meanwhile denied any involvement of the TMC in the attack and said the protests were a “people’s revolt”. Another TMC minister Firhad Hakim claimed BJP is bringing ‘outsiders’ into the state without informing the state government.

South 24 Parganas is one of the hotbeds of TMC-backed Islamist violence against Hindus in West Bengal. Last May, a 200-strong Muslim mob shouting religious slogans had ransacked and looted houses belonging to the Hindu community in Satgachia area, Diamond Harbour.
