Young sadhu found dead in UP, locals allege murder

Continuing the spate of murders of sadhus this year which started at Palghar, a young sadhu has now been found hanging from a tree in UP with locals alleging that he was murdered.

22-year-old Balayogi Satyendra Anand Saraswati Maharaj Naga Baba was found hanging from a tree in the premises of the Veer Baba temple in Chatauna Kala village of Sultanpur district. When his body was discovered yesterday morning, it sent shockwaves through the area and a huge crowd soon gathered.

Locals believe that the sadhu was first murdered and then hanged from the tree using a saffron cloth to make it look like suicide. Police is waiting for the post-mortem report and further investigation before confirming anything about the cause of death.

The young sadhu was a native of Himachal Pradesh who had been living in the village temple for many years. Sultanpur falls in East UP and is just a couple of hours away from Ayodhya. Around 2 years ago, a pujari Shyamlal Upadhyay was murdered in Pehelwan Baba temple, Payagipur in the same district.

Recently, 2 sadhus were murdered in Bulandshahr UP. A few weeks later, a temple priest and his son were found dead in a Shiv temple in Sambhal district. There have been other murders & attacks on sadhus reported from Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab in this period.

In Aug and Sept 2018, many sadhus were murdered in UP and Haryana – police found that gangs were specifically targeting temples and sadhus, and one gang was operating at the behest of ex-Councillor Sabir Ali to make UP CM Yogi Adityanath look bad. The most blood-curdling crime took place in Auraiya where 3 sadhus had their tongues cut off and throats slit by cattle smugglers for tipping police about their crimes.
