12 Hindu temples vandalized within a span of five days in Bangladesh

Although attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh are not unheard of, there has been a sudden spurt in violence. Incidents of Hindu temple vandalization against Hindus are on the rise in Bangladesh.

It has now come to light that a group of unidentified hooligans vandalized murtis of five temples in Dinajpur’s Chirirbandar Upazila located in Northern Bangladesh.

The murtis of the five temples were completely demolished according to local sources. Murtis of at least 12 temples of Upazila’s Abdulpur, Auliapukur and Saitara unions were also vandalised. Sri Ratan Singh, General Secretary of Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, Dinajpur confirmed the incidents.

As per available information, police have arrested five miscreants in connection with the violence. In Chirirbandar Upazila six temples were vandalized earlier by religious fanatics. The Upazilla Police filed two cases on 3rd February over 3 occurrences.

Sri Ashok Kumar Chowhan, Officer in Charge of Nawabganj Police station said 4 persons were arrested in the last couple of weeks who are allegedly involved in the issue.

The Dinajpur Chapter of Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad confirmed that the first murti vandalization took place at a Durga Temple in Nawabganj Upazila on January 23rd. Nawabganj Police Station had, however, filed a case without mentioning any name, in particular, the very next day.

Following this Hindu minorities protested and staged a demonstration in Dinajpur. A human chain was formed in front of the Press Club and a protest procession was carried out. Dinajpur Chapter of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad and Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad spoke at the event.

HinduPost had recently reported how Hindu minorities in Bangladesh are facing an existential crisis. It has now become a norm for Islamists to issue constant threats to the minority Hindu community residing in various parts of Bangladesh. Islamic extremists are reported to have violently attacked women, religious minorities, journalists, writers, and development workers among others.

Additionally, the spate of vandalizations of Hindu temples was also brought to light by Hindupost.

Stepping up their attacks on the minority Hindu population, Islamic religious fanatics of Bangladesh vandalized a series of Hindu temples in different parts of the country. According to National Human Rights Commission, the attacks on several Hindu temples in Bangladesh were carried out under a well-orchestrated plan aimed at grabbing lands of the minority community. The attack on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh is only becoming a regular affair with each passing day.

The recent vandalizations only seem to confirm what the NHRC of Bangladesh has been saying. The attack on Hindu minorities continues unabated only because they practice a faith that Islamists do not agree with.
