Teenage rape victim commits suicide alleging police inaction against Kamruddin and his allies

A 19-year-old rape victim committed suicide leaving a suicide note behind in which she cites lack of action by the police. The police have taken cognizance of the issue and registered a case of abetment to suicide reports TimesNow.

According to the victim, Kamruddin who resides in the same village as the victim called her up early in the morning at 4 asking her to meet him. When she went, Kamruddin abducted her forcibly and he along with his uncle Mobeen and friend Abrar, raped her.

The UP police have issued a statement saying there are several discrepancies in the girl’s statement. As per the police, the victim first filed a case on 3rd October under sections pertaining to abduction, wrongful confinement, and sexual assault.

She is then believed to have changed her statement on the 4th of October stating that she had registered the complaint due to parental pressure and that she had gone to her friend’s place. However, when she was presented before the metropolitan magistrate by the UP police to record her statement as per section 164 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Court), she alleged that her police statement was recorded under duress.

On 13th November she approached the Bulandshahr Police once again to file a complaint against Abrar, Kamruddin, and Mobeen stating that the three had sexually assaulted her in Aligarh. According to the police investigation Mobeen was located in Aligarh while Kamruddin was in Faridabad.

The suicide note left behind by the victim who was an LLB  student, says “Police didn’t trust me. I would’ve felt safe if the accused had been arrested but the police are not taking any action in this case”. The police said that the victim retracted her statement after the first FIR (First Information Report). They also added that that the investigating officer has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated into the matter.

However, the police have now taken cognizance of the suicide note and registered a case under IPC  section 306 against Kamruddin, Abrar, and Mobeen on the basis of the complaint filed by the victim’s father. Further investigation in the case is ongoing.

Update

Reports have emerged of the main accused Kamruddin being arrested by the UP police from Haryana’s Faridabad. The police said that the search for the other two accused is going on and they would be arrested soon. Anupshahar police inspector Subhash Singh has also been suspended in relation to this matter.
