Tamil woman killed for opposing affair between married Hindu tenant and Muslim man?

A Hindu woman was lynched to death by a Muslim man in the temple town of Sirkazhi, Tamilnadu, for objecting to her tenant’s illicit relationship with him. Chithra, 49, wife of Ananda Jyothi, a school headmaster, was drawing Kolam (rangoli) in the wee hours of 18th September when she was beaten up by a stranger and left to die in front of her house.

The perpetrator used an iron pipe to strike her head repeatedly which caused profuse bleeding. As it was quite early in the morning no one noticed her until a neighbor came out and saw the horror. Chithra’s husband and two children rushed out on hearing the neighbor’s screeches to find Chithra lying in a pool of blood.

Brindha, 27 the daughter of one Gunasekaran was a tenant in Chithra’s house. Brindha got acquainted with one Syed Riyasudin in 2014 in her computer center. She was in touch with him since then and allegedly fell in love with him. But she was already married to Selvakumar in 2016.

Selvakumar is said to have left for Singapore to work there within 5 months of their marriage. As her husband left for Singapore Brindha rented Chithra’s house and allegedly started having a relationship with Riyasudin. As per some of the vernacular media reports Brindha is alleged to have come to Sirkazhi to continue her relationship with Riyasudin.

But Chithra was against her premises being used for such illicit affairs and warned both of them based on neighbors’ complaints. She is also said to have banned Riyasudin from coming to her house to which he didn’t pay heed. Left with no choice, Chithra supposedly asked Brindha to leave her house. Enraged by this, Brindha and Riyasudin are said to have plotted her murder and Brindha told him that Chithra would be alone in the wee hours of the morning when she steps out to draw kolam.

According to police reports, Riyasudin decided to kill Chithra and took trials two times before the actual murder. On 18th September, he was ready for Chithra from 3.30 am and committed the crime by 4.25 when Chithra arrived to draw kolam. Riyasudin is a district-level functionary at Vijay fans club. Nagapattinam police identified him through CCTV recordings and unearthed his connection with Chithra. Now both have been arrested.

The incident has shocked the people as it is said to be a closely-knit residential colony. Drawing Kolam in the wee hours of the morning is an inherent part of Sanatana culture but it has been jeopardized by chain snatchers who take advantage of the lonely women. Now murderers also taking advantage of it has caused fear among the innocent dharmik women.

The love jihad angle in this case also isn’t going unnoticed and making people wonder what could have happened to Selvakumar, Brindha’s husband when he returned if this incident hadn’t taken place. This murder has also created panic among house owners who are now frightened to rent/lease houses to such immoral people.

There have been many arguments on social media about refusing to rent/lease houses to certain kinds of people and this incident has only strengthened the position of the house owners in this regard.
