NCP supremo Pawar takes dual stances in cases where NCP leaders facing serious charges

Sharad Pawar led NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) which is a part of the ruling coalition MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) government in Maharashtra has landed itself in trouble with at least two of its top leaders facing serious allegations. While rape charges have been leveled against NCP’s Dhananjay Munde another NCP leader Nawab Malik’s son-in-law Sameer Khan has been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for financing drug import.

Serious allegations of rape have been leveled against Maharashtra cabinet minister of social justice and NCP Leader Dhananjay Munde by Renu Sharma. In her complaint, Renu Sharma has alleged that Dhananjay Munde had raped her when none of her family members were home. She also said that the ordeal continued for the next several days and that the NCP leader had exploited her sexually.

Sharma added that he also filmed the act one day without her consent. Her complaint states that he has been repeatedly exploiting her sexually by luring her with bright prospects in Bollywood. This is not the first time NCP leader Dhananjay Munde has been caught in a controversy.

In 2019, an FIR had been lodged against NCP leader Dhananjay Munde for allegedly making obscene comments against his estranged cousin and former Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde at an election rally. In 2018, a controversial video, on his alleged corrupt practices had also gone viral. The audio clip aired on a regional TV channel reportedly showed discussions between two persons stating about money to be handed over to Dhananjay to close a calling attention motion over a certain issue.

In relation to both the cases, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar has conveniently taken a dual stance. Regarding Dhananjay Munde’s case, the NCP chief initially said, “allegation of rape against Dhananjay Munde is serious. We will discuss the issue within the organization. We will have to make a decision as a party. Munde met me and explained the sequence of events. NCP will take a call as soon as possible”.

Despite agreeing that the allegations were of a serious nature the NCP supremo has refused to act against Munde. Pawar came to the defense of Minority Affairs Minister and party leader Nawab Malik whose son-in-law Sameer Khan was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with a narcotics case.

“Nawab Malik is an important minister there is no personal allegation against him but against one of his relatives who has been arrested,” the NCP chief added. Recall the hue and cry NCP, and its so-called secular allies Congress and others make when any remote connection to BJP or BJP leaders emerges in any case.

This double-speak of the NCP chief exposes his double standards. There is no doubt that Nawab Malik was given a quick clean chit in keeping with NCP’s appeasement and vote bank politics. Instead of taking the errant leaders to task and demanding accountability from them, the NCP chief is covering their tracks and giving them an escape route.

In this background, Mumbai’s Joint Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil having met the NCP supremo at the latter’s Silver Oak residence has raised several questions. It has also come to light that the two even discussed charges leveled against Munde. A police officer meeting the party chief of the party whose leaders are under investigation has drawn flak from several quarters with fears being expressed that the NCP chief is attempting to cover up the issue.

While both the NCP supremo and his party keep demanding accountability from PM Modi and other BJP leaders they hardly ever show accountability themselves.
