A Muslim youth named Shahin Ahmed hailing from Kaliganj area of Karimganj district in Assam has been arrested by police for making derogatory remarks about Hindu Dharma on Facebook, Bengali daily Dainik Jugasankha has reported in its Silchar & Guwahati editions on 14th May, 2018.
The report states that about 2 weeks ago, Shahin went live on Facebook video streaming & made derogatory remarks about Hindu Dharma. Debdulal Das, circle president of a social organization Youth Coalition’s north Karimganj unit, filed a complaint with police of Kotwali Thana in this connection. But police did not arrest the culprit even 2 weeks after the complaint. Last friday, Bajrang Dal organized a protest on different issues & this issue was also picked up there. They also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister over inertia of police in this matter.
The report adds that 15 days after the complaint was lodged, police finally caught the accused on Saturday night at about 12 am. “We heard from different sources that police did not arrest him, rather the culprit surrendered to police. Police did not take any step by their own. This is the position of police.” petitioner Debdulal Das told the newspaper with discontent.
