Muslim women caught having non-vegetarian food in Thanjavur Big Temple

A video showing some Muslim women consuming meat in Thanjavur Brihadeeswarar temple has surfaced on social media. Alert devotees confronted them and sent them away with the help of the police. Allowing non-Hindus inside temples in the name of encouraging tourism has resulted in desecration of such sacred spaces.

In the video, 2 Muslim women can be seen eating food with a few children inside the temple complex. They were sitting in front of the Raja Rajan tower of the temple when a devotee confronted them. The devotee can be heard asking why they were consuming chicken inside the temple when there are public spaces nearby. “People believe that even those who consume non-vegetarian food (at home) should come to the temple, but you are eating chicken here”, one of them says.

Brihadeeswarar temple is treated like a tourist place by many and non-Hindus can be seen inside the temple at any given day. Most come to the temple to ‘enjoy’ the sculptures and architectural marvels, thanks to Dravidianist and Tamil nationalist propaganda that it is a ‘Tamil Monument’. Unlike devotees of Brihadeeswara Swamy, to non-Hindus, including HINOs like Periyarists, the murtis are mere stones.

Even though the temple is under the Archeological Survey of India’s (ASI) maintenance, the temple is managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments(HRCE) department. HRCE has proved to be a puppet of the government with anti-Hindus installed in influential positions. There have been many incidents of HRCE officials disrespecting Hindu beliefs and desecrating temple spaces.

In September 2022, HRCE officials were caught eating non-vegetarian food in Thiruthani Murugan temple’s rest house, breaking veg-only rules. In January 2022, HRCE passed a resolution to build a fish market on temple land using temple money. In 2021, few men, allegedly Muslims, desecrated a temple tank by using it as a swimming pool, cooking meat and consuming alcohol.

In 2020, HRCE employees consumed alcohol, and meat and smoked in the Nandavanam(flower garden) of the Kolanjiappar temple in Virudhachalam. While non-Hindus get to decide who enters their places of worship, Hindus are left to become victims of secularism as the government controls most of the Hindu temples. A detailed report on what allowing non-Hindus inside temples results in and why it raises a red flag can be read here.

  1. Indians (so called political leaders) do not know the value of freedom and responsibility. Respect for eachother, honouring others’ views, culture and sentiments are totally unknown to them. Maturity level sub zero. This kind of insulting behaviour and the disrespect shown to Hindu faiths would not have happened in British rule. They even valued merits wherever they noticed. Example Mathematician Ramanujam’s genius was noticed and recognised by British, when he was struggling to lead a normal life. Will we ever learn the basic values in life.
