Mobs led by Latin Catholic priests attack Vizhinjam police station

Violence brewing at Vizhinjam, especially over the last 48 hours, under the guise of protests, turned into a full-fledged war yesterday night. Under the Latin Archdiocese’s leadership, goons attacked and destroyed the Vizhinjam police station. At least 40 policemen were hurt, and seven were seriously injured and admitted to hospitals. Several police vehicles were vandalized during the communal violence. The emergency and cruelty shown by Kerala police against Hindus during the peaceful Sabarimala protests were missing this time.

On Sunday, trouble began around 8.30 pm when hundreds of Christian goons raided the police station. Earlier, the police arrested five people, including Shelton, a native of Vizhinjam. Shadow police had tracked and detained them for attacking Hindus who opposed the protest drama the Latin church had engaged in. Following this, hundreds of assailants attacked the police station with deadly weapons under the leadership of vicars of Vizhinjam Parish, demanding their release.

Incidentally, by morning, police bailed out all the arrested except Shelton. Though police have registered an FIR against 3,000 ‘unknown persons,’ they did not charge them with an attempt to murder. This has not gone down well with the police force in Kerala. The attackers had threatened the detained police officers that they would be burned alive inside the Vizhinjam police station.

The mob overturned several vehicles parked inside the police station. Then the assailants entered the station and destroyed the wireless sets and communication devices. Police personnel who tried to stop them were attacked with deadly weapons. Nine policemen were injured, the electricity was disconnected, and police officers had to crouch in fear inside their police station.

Attackers, including women, surrounded the police station late at night. Vehicles, CCTV cameras and wireless sets were also smashed while police officers were surrounded and beaten by rampaging mobs. Journalists who tried to cover the incident were assaulted mercilessly, and many had to be hospitalized with severe injuries.

Attackers detained the seriously injured policemen inside the police station and prevented them from evacuating to the hospital. Meanwhile, other assaulters blocked the ambulances and police vehicles that were called to help the detained police officers. Media workers who took pictures on their mobile phones were also beaten up.

Though the administration knew that serious issues were brewing, at the time of the attack, only a handful of police were there. After more police arrived at the spot, they lathi-charged and lobbed tear gas shells. The injured police officers were shifted to the hospital, but by then, it was around 10.30 pm. The protestors ran away after the police action but regrouped near the nearby bus stand. They then resorted to heavy stone pelting.

On Sunday, Christian priests pointed out Hindu homes to Christian mobs who attacked even pregnant women. Though several police officers witnessed the assault, they failed to react. Around 500 police officers were there in the vicinity. Latin Christian terrorists targeted the homes of Hindus who opposed the violence unleashed by the church-sponsored goondas for the past 120 days in the name of ‘protests’ against the Vizhinjam port construction. Hindus requested the administration to bring in central forces or the army but to no avail. Several Hindus were seriously injured and hospitalized at Thiruvananthapuram medical college.

Latin catholic leaders had promised the Kerala high court that they would not prevent work at the port. On Saturday, heavy vehicles carrying boulders to the construction site began to arrive by 6 am, but allegedly, police asked them to wait till 10 am. There were only a handful of protestors in the vicinity at that time. Had the goons tried to stop the vehicles, police could have quickly arrested and removed them. They did not and waited for more protestors to arrive.

Meanwhile, church bells began to ring, and violent cult followers began to assemble. Priests also sent Whatsapp messages that incited violence. Media reports telecasted voice clips by a priest Theodosius D’Cruz, who said the time has come for church bells to ring continuously (a bugle-call of sorts) and requested his followers to arrive in numbers.

After the attack on the police station, the additional district magistrate, police commissioner, and deputy collector reached the spot, and more police were camping there. They invited the priests for ‘talks,’ and the vicars told reporters they needed to re-think whether the five persons arrested earlier needed to be set free. Had they done this a few hours earlier, the violence could have been averted. Those five are the same goons who unleashed violence against Hindus, and the police freed four.

Tension prevailed until late at night, and the situation was far from under control. Rather than wait for forensics, the administration is trying to clean up the mess quickly. The vandalized vehicles were towed away from the crime scene at 2 am.

Following the incident, District Collector Geromic George banned the operation of liquor shops within Vizhinjam police station for seven days from tomorrow. Vizhinjam is just 15 km from Thiruvananthapuram, and dozens of liquor shops and bars exist all over the place. Rather than stand up and take some concrete steps, such smoke screens do not fool the common man. Recent incidents have shown that minority appeasement is diminishing the morale of our police forces.

Even though the Pinarayi Vijayan-led communist government knew that Christian mobs targeted Hindus, they asked their police officers to stay put. Local police had their hand tied down. The Christians took this as an opportunity to indulge in communal violence. However, Hindu Aikya Vedi president Valsan Thillankery and a handful of workers visited the Hindu victim’s homes on Sunday. They were not given any police protection. Interestingly, BJP leaders were nowhere to be seen. The same radicals have now attacked police personnel.

Earlier on Sunday, it was reported that Latin Archdiocese Archbishop Thomas J. Neto had been named as the first accused by the Police FIR for creating an atmosphere of terror to prevent the construction of Vizhinjam port. Other accused included Bishop Christudas, Eugene Pereira, and around fifty Christian priests. A case was also registered against 1,000 ‘unknown’ persons who indulged in violence. The FIR said that the Archbishop and other pastors conspired. Police reported a case for causing damages of more than two lakh rupees.

Police registered attempts to murder, conspiracy, and criminal association charges. The police had also recorded nine cases against the protest committee led by the Latin Catholic Church, which turned the project area into a battlefield. The government claimed that they decided to recover the losses incurred during the strike from the goons. They agreed to communicate the same to the High Court. Suspiciously, even though all these charges are non-bailable and cognizable severe offenses, not a single Christian pastor was arrested, leading to the attack on the police station.

During Sunday mass, the Latin Archdiocese read a circular in all their churches calling to continue the struggle against the construction of the Vizhinjam port. The circular claimed that the administration had not resolved even one of the strike committee’s demands. Eugene Perera said he would face the case legally and was not afraid and called the strike/violence a ‘just cause.’

Unparalleled brutal violence scenes have occurred in Vizhinjam over the past few hours. Within minutes, violent mobs arrived from the coastal belts of Poovar, Puthiyathura, Palam, Pulluvila, and Vizhinjam areas. The attackers came under the leadership of the Latin Catholic Church with dangerous weapons like cut baits (used for deep-sea fishing), nets, and wire knives. Cut baits can be thrown around the neck from a distance and immediately subdue, maim and even kill the victim. Women were also seen carrying such weapons to carry out violence.

In early September, HinduPost reported that these priests were planning large-scale violence. Back then, the same priests had warned the administration that they would attack police stations if the local police arrested anyone among them. We also exposed the local anti-nationals and their access to foreign funds. Like now, the government failed to stop the priests and their conmen who threatened to take the laws of the land into their hands. Media reports suggest that a shady character named Fr. Labrin Yesu was behind the terrorist attacks.

Rather shamelessly, the local left-leaning media are trying to propagate that the Hindus who opposed the Latin church ‘protests’ also took part in the attack on the police station. Though there is no evidence of aggression from the Hindus, some media houses also tried to justify the earlier violence using the same tools. All that local Hindus who opposed the Latin protests did was objecting to the violence using peaceful Nama Japas (chanting mantras). The same reporters failed to show the attacks on pregnant Hindu women inside the sanctuary of their homes.

These Latin priests and their cult followers have proved that they do not take orders from our courts nor fear our police. Once arrested, they have a history of claiming victimhood and alleging police atrocities to instigate even more violence. Since the state and the central government have continuously failed the Hindus in the area, has the time come for them to arm themselves to protect their lives and properties? Or should Keralite Hindus bow their heads, engage in a mass exodus from their motherland like the Kashmiri Hindus, and become refugees in Delhi?
