Minor Hindu Girl Abducted by Muslim Family Since 8 Months – Kolkata HC Directs WB Police to Act

Korban Ali and his son Mintu Sheikh allegedly abducted Vinod Das’ minor daughter on 9th June, 2017. The girl is still said to be in captivity at Garden Reach area of Kolkata, but West Bengal police has refused to raid the place to recover the girl citing law & order concerns in a ‘sensitive’ area, Bengali daily Sangbad Pratidin has reported.

The hapless father approached Koklata High Court (HC), and Judge Debangshu Basak issued a stinging order asking Kolkata’s Joint Commissioner of Police to take immediate action. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for 28th Feb.

Vinod Das is a safai karamchari with Kolkata’s municipality. Being a widower, his daughter, a 10th standard student, used to stay at her maternal aunt’s house when she suddenly disappeared on 9 June last year. After searching far and wide, the father learnt that the girl had been abducted by Mintu Sheikh and his father Korban Ali, both residents of Metiabruz area in Garden Reach, and that she was being held in a house in Meher Manzil area of the same the same locality (Garden Reach).

Das along with other locals reached Garden Reach police station to lodge a complaint. They provided the exact address where the girl was being held. But police refused to act citing the ‘sensitivity’ of Garden Reach area. Incidentally, Garden Reach is colloquially known as ‘mini-Pakistan’ of Kolkata, a term even used by TMC MLA & minister Bobby Firhad Hakim while talking to a Pakistani reporter.

This is the dismal state of Hindus in Kolkata today. While Mamata Banerjee is planning to shut down RSS-linked schools for spreading ‘Hindutva fanaticism’, her police refuses to rescue a poor Hindu’s minor daughter being held captive in a Muslim-majority area.

Update

18 April

Kolkata Police tweeted last evening about a ‘false rumour being spread on social media about a missing minor girl held captive in a Metiabruz house and police being afraid of raiding house.’

It was not clear whether police was referring to the case lodged by Vinod Das or some other, but many social media users reacted with more local media reports of Das’ missing daughter case, such as Anandabazar, Kolkata24x7.com and a copy of the court order directing Kolkata Police to raid the premises where the father claims his daughter is being held, and produce the girl at the date of next hearing i.e. 28 Feb, which has already passed.

Further, it turns out that the Kolkata HC has been closed for the last 2 months due to a strike by the bar association over non-appointment of judges to fill the vacancies in the court. So no hearing could have occurred on 28 Feb, and there is no confirmation whether Kolkata Police has raided the Garden Reach area premises as directed by the Court.
